Shooting through the glass can be a real pain, which is why shooting above the rink is optimal. Glass smudges are hard to avoid, and completely ruin shots.

It tends to compress the players, especially the kids, whereas shooting low (through the glass, just above the dasher) makes them look bigger and more imposing. I also like to shoot from the corners or from around the faceoff circle in the endzone. That way I can get shots of the action/scrums in front of the net. I also get better faces sometimes if I kneel down and shoot so I'm shooting upwards at the players.
