Not bad for first time.

Suggestions are to boost ISO to 3200 - shots look just a tad underexposed. This should also allow you to increase shutter speed slightly (perhaps 1/500). Also, crop tighter and don't be afraid to frame vertically.

What are the best places to shoot in a rink?

I like to shoot above the rink if possible. Shooting through the glass can be a real pain, which is why shooting above the rink is optimal. Glass smudges are hard to avoid, and completely ruin shots.

I prefer to shoot through the glass from the corners. You can get the rushes, goal crease, behind-the-net and plays along the half-boards. There are problems with the glass, of course, but they can be worked around in many cases.

I don't like the angles one gets from shooting from above the glass. It tends to compress the players, especially the kids, whereas shooting low (through the glass, just above the dasher) makes them look bigger and more imposing. However, that's my personal preference - ymmv.

K4:

Dittto what Brik said. See MY THREAD HEREfor some examples of shots through glass from down in corners. Glass was pretty clean so I was fortunate here. There are also a couple from above glass in penalty box. If you get too high in stands, sometimes you miss players faces and get more of the tops of their heads. If you are in the corner/end area where you are positoned in your photo #2, focus on players as they skate into the zone at or just inside the blueline to get some good puck carrying shots.

Cheers!

Chris

Good Work for the first time. I'd crop a little tighter to emphasize the player/action.

As far as the best place to shoot, I usually shoot from the bench/penalty box. Only problem is you're sometimes blocked from the action by other players or refs.

If the glass is reasonable, try from the corners. (It'd sure be nice if every rink had cut-outs)

Keep'm coming!

I've shot from above but you don't get the feeling that you're part of the action. I also like to shoot from the corners or from around the faceoff circle in the endzone. That way I can get shots of the action/scrums in front of the net. I also get better faces sometimes if I kneel down and shoot so I'm shooting upwards at the players.
