5Dc Scratched Sensor!

So I just got home from Samys in Santa Ana where I was going to pick up a wet clean setup (after noticing my sensor needed cleaning). The guy there (Ken, about the only one I've met who's remotely knowledgeable/helpful) had me test out a loupe, and much to my surprise I not only saw the dust specks that wouldn't blow off but we also found about 3 scratches running lengthwise on the LPF. Crap.

The camera was in at CPS in October for the mirrorbox replacement/recall thingy. I am thinking that they did the damage to the LPF. If the damage was already there, wouldn't they have noted it on the work form?? Calling Canon tomorrow, but I want to be prepared to get some good help.

My work order from CPS states in the fine print under "Repair Warranty"

"...this repair is being provided to you as a courtesy only, "as is" and without warranties of any kind... Canon will not be responsible for any damage (including, without limitation, consequential damages and lost profits), cost, expense, loss or inconvenience as a result of these repairs..."

do you notice these scratches on your photo's?


some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Does the scratch it show up in pictures??? If not, I would be bummed but not too concerned. Now if it shows up in pictures, that is another story. I would be quizzing Canon thoroughly. Especially if you have not cleaned your sensor.


If you try to fail and succeed, what have you really done??

just because the contract says that doesn't mean they won't help you out and replace it if you tell them your situation. make sure not to be accusatory (right away at least...). that sucks though... good luck!

Yeah, that language is boilerplate for a "recall" repair (the mirror fix), meaning that they're not responsible for you losing work or profits. If they messed up your camera while fixing it, I'd have to think they'd be willing to fix it.

Just don't clean it! Tell them you examined it with a loupe in preparation to clean it, and noticed the scratches.

"including, without limitation, consequential damages " could limit responsibility from any subsequent damages that occurred during this repair. Call in and see what they will do though, and explain the situation honestly and hopefully they'll offer some remediation. But if it's not visible on pics then I really wouldn't worry about it.

shouldn't apply to any damage they actually cause. If you take your car to a mechanic to have the starter changed, and while he's there accidentally wrecks your transmission somehow, he's liable for the transmission even if he says that his repair of the starter was "as is" and that no consequential damages are his fault.

still, hard to prove who did it.

I shot a wedding this two weeks ago and while examining some of the shots, there is definitely noticeable spots. After looking through the loupe, I saw exactly 3 pieces of dust, and very clearly at that. One of the photos (dress shot with lots of wall) has about 9 spots on it. I am going to call and drop in there tomorrow morning, hopefully they will help me out. I have another wedding on Saturday so this needs to get taken care of!! Thanks for all the consoling words!!

Even with that disclaimer put in, i'd imagine canon would be willing to service this out of goodwill, if indeed it was their fault :)

Imagine the giant fallout if they dared to refuse a complimentary service!

Well, I got the shaft. Canon Irvine told me it wasn't their fault, I told them it wasn't my fault, you guys can guess who's story they chose to believe. Called a customer service supervisor... got the shaft.

It'd be hard to prove to them that they broke it if you'd had the camera if your possession for a long time after the repair (even if not, it'd still be hard to prove that they did it).

Can you post a picture where the scratches are visible in the image? Are you sure it's a scratch and not streaking from someone wet-cleaning the LPF?

IVlax, you may be right, it could be wet marks from the sensor cleaning.

I.... don't see scratches.

I see a moderate amount of dust at f/22, I see a big spec in the lower right hand corner which my guess with an air blower you can easily get out.

I see what could be residuals from a sloppy wet cleaning job going vertically, but I don't see any scratches horizontally -- where were they located on the sensor?
