Here is a 'headless' one for $179... http://www.amazon.com …ics&qid=1264179928&sr=8-1 (external link)

It is a ROCK. Unfortunately it weighs like one too!

Carbon Fiber would be nice for two reasons, 1.) Ability to absorb vibration 2.) weight savings.
However, if you are looking, you will notice that carbon fiber does not always mean lighter or better, but it IS always costlier!

Thanks for that link Duncan, I looked a little for the "Manfrotto 055PROBX", but not the "Manfrotto 055PROB", as of now, I'm still unsure what the "X" means, but I assume it's a newer model, 'cause there's not much mention of it online, that I could see.
I'll definitely be checking that out though, and maybe it'll do what I need.
Who knows, maybe I'll run upon a good deal on a carbon fiber, (which I will look for) one that my wife will go for, which I did forget to say, my wife DOES have the final say-so. I am am man, just not a 'real' man. heheheh

Thanks for your help on this.

Sorry, my bad. I adjusted my former post to reflect the correct model - 055XPROB not probx. The B just means black, not sure about the X though.

Yeah, right! A screw from them costs more than his budget! Don't bother looking, unless you want to drool. Plus, they don't make tripod legs, they use Gitzo I believe.

It's some great advice on choosing tripod legs...not something to buy. ;)

Doh! My bad AGAIN!

I just saw RRS and thought $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. The information is solid, regardless of brand. At least I was right about Gitzo. All their references are to Gitzo models.:D

I'll give that link a look, although, from the posts below you, I don't know... heheh
That does look like a good place to learn though, so thank you.

That's O.K., I haven't had much time to really peruse that stuff anyway, but I will.
Thanks for clearing that up though.

In my experience, the Manfrotto 3021 legs were plenty tough enough to handle a 500mm on a 1D with a solid Gimble.. the downside was the weight.

Let us know what you think of that Gimbal head,. I've never seen mention of that one, it must be fairly new on the market and it looks like a tremendous bargain.

I will, as soon as I get some time on it, I'll let y'all know how it takes the test of time, and whatever else happens.
The gimbal is new enough that nobody had any reviews about hardly, I just saw my first ones on Amazon (I think) last night.

Thanks for that on the 3021, that was mentioned to me twice now, so that keeps it in the running.
I appreciate all of the help.

Thanks again John, that actually is a very informative page, not for buying, but for learning, I didn't want you to think that I dismissed this due to the price talk. heheh

Thanks!

To the others that helped, I'm still looking, I'm going down the rows and trying to get it to sink into my cranial bucket.:)

That's another good link John, thanks for that.
I'm going to read that soon, I just need to make my way to it. :)

To all that posted,

Thanks for the time, and I am still in the process of learning, what to do, what to buy, and what bank to ro..., well, I better not say that. :)

Every one of you have give me stuff to really think over, look at, and really wonder how I can convince my wife, who used to live under a bridge with all of the other trolls... heheh
(When it comes to 'toys', I mean that!)
More than likely I will wait as long as I can before I buy a tripod that will do the job, rather than just get one to 'get by', not unless I see a used good buy in the meantime.
I don't hate my tripod, but they definitely make better ones, I'll take it to shoot eagles, then I'll definitely know how good it is, or isn't. heh
(I might be kidding about that, I don't know yet)

Anyway, keep it coming if you know something that'll not only help me, but help others, this has been eye-opening for me.

Thank you all!

Randy
:)

You might want to take a look at the Induro's, they're Chinese copies of Gitzos, the ones I've seen are well built and, right around $200.00 on eBay. I was seriously considering one till I got my gitzo.

Canon, Gitzo, Arca Swiss, RRS, Custom made accessories.
