I just got into photography and I would like to know if the lenses I have purchesed were a good choice. I have the telephoto 70-200mm f4L and the 17-40mm f4L. I had the Tamron DI 28-75mm D F2.8 XR. I just got back from Los cabos Mexico and I took some great pics of my friends on the beach. but I found that some of them tured out a litle blury. I also went whale watching and I wasn't able to get close enough and they are also a little blurry. My friend asked me to take some photos of his band this weekend. What should I do? Are my lenses any good to get good shots? and what settings should I use? Thanks

Make sure your shutter speeds are fast enough (that you are not getting camera shake) and that you are choosing a proper focus point (not automatic!). You have good-to-great lenses capable of great images, it just takes a little practice. Don't be afraid to crank up the ISO if you need to.

Most likely, the shutter speed may have been too slow or if some part of the image is sharp but other part is soft, then it may be due to misfocusing.

This may be a good read to start with.

Hi M.IN.T welcome to the forum. :)

The lenses that you have are very good - all the Canon lenses with an L in the name are the professional series and are generally the best quality lenses you can get.

As the others say, post some pictures with the exif info so we can see what happened.

The general rule to avoid blurry picture caused by too slow a shutter speed is to make sure your shutter speed is equal to or faster than your focal length multiplied by your sensor size. For example, your 70-200 lens at 200mm on a crop camera should have a shutter speed of at least 1/320 sec to avoid shaky pictures or with your 17-40 at 17mm it should be 1/30 sec or faster.
