By selling some old gear and lenses I have built up a little over $2K in my photo fund. But it's been sitting there because I can't decide what to purchase. Here are the items on my list.

Fisheye - ??? (suggest something what would work on a FF camera)
16-35mm f/2.8 L
17-40mm f/4 L
24-70mm f/2.8L
85mm f/1.8
100mm f/2
1.4 extender
580EX II Flash

As to what I shoot, it's all over the map. I primarily do glamour photography in the studio, but I also am doing more landscapes and nature shots.

I've been taking a lot of family shots the past 3 months, in low light, indoors and at night. I've used my 50mm but find the focal range a little too limiting. I also tried the 70-200mm but it was also limiting in a different way. For these situations I'm leaning towards the 24-70.

I rented a 17-40mm for a trip to Yosemite and loved it, but wondering if I should bite the bullet and get the 16-35mm to use indoors as well.

I have a 430EX flash, and am looking at the 580EX mainly so I can control my 430EX off camera.

So looking for suggestions. Thanks.

from your list and your usage:

85/1.8 + 580EX II for Studio portaiture and glamour
17-40 for landscapes.

the 85mm is also good for low light and you may use it to compliment your 50mm (which one do you have?).

Thanks for the input. I'm not sure why I would need another body. If I were doing sports photography I would agree, keep a long lens on one body and a wide on another but for the type of shooting I do that 2nd body would sit idle 90% of the time.

As for the 580EX for studio work, I have studio strobes so don't need it there. It would mainly be used for strobist style work outdoors.

(BTW I hate it when I have a type in the title)

If you use strobes outdoors, how about the Elinchrom that are portable and come in a kit with the battery pack?

what about more modifiers?

What is limiting about the 50mm? Too long? short?

Nice problem to have! You seem to have everything covered pretty well. If you have no need for something longer like the 100-400, I'd go with the 50 mm F/1.2 or the 200mm f/2.8.

It can be both. I had a situation last week in a small room and it was too long. At a xmas party last month it was too short. It's often hard to move about a party, a zoom would be ideal, but I need the low light capabilities. That was kind of why I was thinking about the 24-70mm.

I already have the 100-400mm. I need to play around with primes more. My thinking is I already have a 200mm range covered with my 70-200mm, but I'm sure the IQ would be better with the 200mm prime. Maybe I'll rent one and play with it.

Sorry Karl. I could see where it would be annoying. I could also use the $2K for other household things, but I have a deal with my wife where any money I make with photography I can reinvest, so I kinda feel like I should keep that photo kitty around and not spend it on groceries. If I really can't come up with something I'm going to use, then I'm not going to buy something just because I can.
