What camera, what budget, what lenses do you have, any preference for zoom or prime?

Big budget, and zooms:
100/2.8L IS macro
70-200/2.8L IS
16-35/2.8L

this covers about anything :-). try being more specific on what you want to shoot. also provide information which equipement you already have.

i would recomend you starting off with one lens first. so if you really want something that does wide and tele then you will probably go looking for a super zoom which are versatile but do not do macro (18-200). despite the fact that these superzoom do not have the best optical qualities, they will allow you to find what focal length you use most. before buying more specialized lenses.

on the other side if you know exactly what you want to shoot (i.e. low light indors) then i would recomend you getting a nifty fifty (canon EF 50mm f1.8).

all depends on your needs

500-600 pounds is a lot per lens. what is your global budget and what do you primarily shoot? how many lenses do you intend to get.
