Surely you wouldn't end up selling it?

I got quite a few messages enquiring about the cancellation - I'd sell it if the price was right. And by that, I'm talking atleast $1200, given that it includes the (fairly expensive original Canon hood) and a 77mm Hoya HD filter (with both in their original packaging and boxes).

I think one of the reasons so many people were interested was that I also offered shots produced by the lens in the listing:

First time I've tried this strategy for eBay, and it appears to have worked well.

Yeah, it'd definitely take a bit for you to let go of it. It's a good idea to provide the shots too but it's not like the 17-55 is a lens that has any known problems so it's just confidence building for the potential buyer, really.

Aaand if the potential buyer is an idiot that believes that gear makes shots it'll let them think they'll get shots that good with the lens :p

Exactly. Which is why I always use immaculate spelling and grammar in my listings. Moreover, as elitist as this sounds, I mention that I'm a research student with an office at an university, as nerdy academics are rarely perceived to be of the dodgy type. I use a few other (legit) tricks up my sleeve too to market my items, and I've always received ending prices on gear which are a cut above the average.

But this time.. I don't think the ending price for the 17-55 would have satisfied me..

Yeah, I probably should have made the disclaimer that most digital enthusiasts post-process their shots too.

I had a look through completed listings on the 17-55 and it didn't look like it would have ended at more than $1050-1100. Others were ending below $1000 with the hood included.

Whenever I've listed something, I've just put the reserve as a bit lower than I'd want and it's sold well. For example, my 1D classic was up for $600. It went through with no bids. I put it down to $400 and it ended up at $690! My iPod touch that ended tonight only went up $5 from my reserve, but I was fine with that. I can't stand trying to risk a low reserve so I'll start it high and let the item do the talking. No fancy listing from me

What charges do ebay lay on the seller?
Listing fee and successful sale?

Check the fees page on Ebay. Pretty much, but it depends how much your sale is for too.

Listing fee, which for me on the iPod was $3, and a final value fee. Can't really remember how much that is. Paypal takes a fair chunk too, though.

I don't bother with reserves and always start at a low price, say $9.95. My listings are always for the maximal possible time - 10 days.

By starting low, you amass a huge Watchers List and the large sample size guarantees a price reflective of its used market value.

Listing (along with any extras, such as extra pics etc.), Final Value Fee (i.e. sale fee) and since everyone pretty much pays by PayPal, the PayPal fee. Basically, you'll lose around 6-9% of your final auction price on fees (for stuff which costs atleast several hundred bucks).

Thanks. Might have some second thoughts and just list one of my lenses on ebay and see how it goes.

If you know what you're doing, you'll be able to get a good price on the 17-40L on eBay. Personally, I'd chuck it on there now before the AUD bounces up in the coming months, reducing the cost of a new.

Yeah, I've noticed that. I just don't have the guts to do it  If it was something I was selling just to get rid of then maybe I wouldn't mind but when it's something like an iPod or a lens that I know I could sell away from eBay for a definite price, I can't get myself to risk it.
