If it was something I was selling just to get rid of then maybe I wouldn't mind but when it's something like an iPod or a lens that I know I could sell away from eBay for a definite price, I can't get myself to risk it.
For the stuff that's less popular, a reserve is definitely understandable. But for things like common Canon lenses, trudged through by hordes of people each day, you'll always be guaranteed a price reflective of its used market value, especially if you have a large Watchers List. I always shake my head at the auctions which have a very high starting price - you're killin' your own profit!
For lenses like the 10-22, 17-55, common L's, common primes etc., I'd happily start the bid at $9.95, no reserve.
I recently sold the 50D this way. 10k clicks after 1 year (so no warranty), and it still fetched $1,100 (less than $200 from new).
