If you're only doing sunsets then 400ws quadra/dlite is going to be plenty of omph.

Plenty ?? As in "Lot's to spare"...Like "Leaving plenty of head-room" ?

Even thrown into a suitably large modifier ?

If 400 w/s is more-then-adequate, then that helps narrow things down somewhat .......

Austen.

I just want to take nice photographs of people.

You can rent the Quadra for $20/day under the try before you buy promo.

Yes, but that's probably not going to extend to a rent for a week for $140, because one day isn't long to play with stuff :-)

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

How long have you been shooting for?
You should know how much power you need by now, you need Quadra power :p

That's not even beginning to help, really :-)

If you haven't shot with big lights before it's really hard to tell how much power you need, really, because it's so different to speedlights.

Just ask them, they might say yes LOL.

"Hi, I'm off to Perth for the week to shoot a wedding - can I hire these for $140 for the week? Thanks. Oh, and I need a few modifiers as well."

:-)

I like the idea of a head and pack, but at the same time I dislike its "single point of failure" problem, and with them, it's not cheap to get a 'spare' pack.

Small and light is nice, though, as is small weight up on the stands.

Yeah....I'll take one of 'em in the backyard (with an extension lead) and see just what you get for 600 w/s ............

Technical question....If I turn the strobe to 1/2 power, is that gonna be the same as 300 w/s .....Or one-stop less then what I get at 600 w/s...or are they both the same ???

Austen.

How long did it take you to write that reply, only for it to be the simplest thing?

well, not too long because i thought about what could have gone wrong with mine given that it was my first foray into multi-OCF territory....

i'm kinda proud actually that it was the first thing that i thought of! :)

You should have had him checked the hard tasks first, one by one, then feed him the easy, obvious one.. then again I am evil!

Nice shots Greg : )

Austen - sunrises/sunsets with the Quadra and a decent modifier will be a piece of p**. You seem to be thinking that the Quadra's are way down in power compared to the 640ws of the AB Einstein or 1600's (nice and confusing calling them 1600's when they are 640ws eh?)... don't forget that to get an extra f-stop of light you need to DOUBLE the power. So compared to the Quadra's the AB's will give you just over 0.5 stop extra which is nothing. Now compared to the Ranger (its 1100ws by the way) the difference starts becoming more apparent at about 1.3 stops more power.... which would suit whacking on a nice big double diffused light sucking modifier to give your models "lovely" soft wrap around light (not my thing but some folks like it : ).

Note that if I need to stop down my aperture while using the Quadra outdoors I just turn up my ISO. Here's an example... f16@ISO 200 with the beauty dish again... I don't even think I was at full power.

...also remember that with 35mm and crop sensors you don't really want to be shooting at such small apertures regularly anyway since you're getting softer images thanks to diffraction.

Mic - AB's are great for the money although with the new features in the Dlites I think the value gap dimishes significantly. Sure Elinchrom modifiers are pricey but its a once off investment... buy cheap buy twice as they say! If you do want to buy similar priced modifiers to the AB range no problem as all you need is an Elinchrom speedring. In fact I'll be buying the new PLM's when they come out since they will have thinner shafts to fit the Elinchrom accessory mount ;)
