Tas' taken me quite awhile to 'perfect' this setup, but I just use a normal backpack (say, a medium Targus laptop bag) with a modified Lowepro Nova 4 AW bag. By modified, I mean with the top flap and front pockets totally cut off, so that the Nova is literally a 'pocket' which then slides into my backpack. I then velcro down a pad right down the middle of the Nova, and this allows me to carry two bodies mounted with lenses. There's no friction between the two bodies at all, so no physical clashing of any sort - even while running. I then use the laptop compartment to carry my books and notes. Works extremely well - allows me to carry up to 6cm worth of notes/books and a twin 5D/mounted 16-35 & 70-200 setup in great comfort. That's the reason I actually wanted to sell those two other Lowepro bags - I find this laptop bag/Nova combo to be absolutely mankini-astic.

Sounds nice  I'd say that backpacks (with some mods or whatever) are the best option for laptop/books/camera but I just don't like them anymore. Shoulder bags are where it's at

I'll be right  I've got another Crumpler (bought it on Thursday) but it doesn't fit as much as it looked like it would when I found it in the shop (that's only books too, I couldn't find any room for the 1D2 alone) so I will probably return it... Damn impulse buys.

The ThinkTank UD50 is still very tempting :( But I'm not buying it without a good look. Might try Ted's or Michaels on Elizabeth St on Monday like Richard recommended because the price isn't so bad for what it would do for me, really.

Is this our old friend 'Vault" (aka The Yellow Peril) ? Where has it ended up ? (shows how often I wander around the big smoke).

This is a weird kinda shot. I like it.

So I am pretty sure i want a pelican 1510, actually the 1514 which is a 1510 with padded dividers. I can't find many people selling it locally and the ones that are have very high price. So it looks like ill be doing a b&h order soon unless anyone can link me to a reasonably priced local stockist??

caseshop.com.au - contact Trumples, though, as he can often do better price-wise. Worked out well cheaper for me than buying from overseas.

Just be aware that if you're contemplating using this as a carry-on bag, I'd strongly advise against it.

It is with 1cm of the maximum allowable size, which, on a bad day could well cause you grief with your boarding flight attendant. I would recommend you print both the dimensions of the case from Pelicans website, AND the airline baggage limits, and laminate these two together back-to-back.

However, the weight of the EMPTY 1510 / 1514 is 5.44Kg, from a max allowance of 7.0Kg.

This only allows 1.56Kg for either the foam (1510) or dividers (1514) and all your kit.

Many boarding gates *DO* have scales, and FREQUENTLY the CSM (head flight-attendant) will tell the boarding flight-attendant to ensure cabin bag limits are enforced !

When this happens, you bag will be taken from you, have a "Late" tag attached and slipped through the secret door, down the helter-skelter, and hopefully, possibly, maybe, be seen by the ramp staff and loaded onto your flight. Or maybe not seen until later in the day ........

These cases are good enough that your gear will almost certainly be safe if sent as checked baggage ..............

Austen.

(Have you seen my avatar ;) ?? )

+1 - I've travelled via air in Australia with my 1514 several times and there is NO WAY they were going to let me take it on the plane. Even after taking things like the 1D+24-70 out it was still wayyyyyyyy over the weight limit.

I honestly feel that it would be dangerous at that weight even if you did have it on-board - I've seen the overhead lockers pop open in turbulence and even some bags fall out and can you imagine the damage a heavy hard case could do to some poor person's head?

I've got some shots up of a lighting-kit loaded 1514 in my sig if you are looking for some ideas as to how to pack them. I love mine to bits and it goes on every job with me!

Very true. The water is murky, there's a group of perverts walking by every 15 minutes, the talcumn powder bottle/smoke machine is running out of juice. ;)

No worries Dave. We haven't met p2p (HAH! Geek talk!) before. ;)

Tax from today. I ended up with a commission with a Master Farrier to shoot some portraits with a few of his larger clients.

Yes i am aware of that, im not getting it for a air carry on case, just to store all the lenses that dont fit in my everyday crumpler bag. Also it will be handy for those time i want to bring everything along i can just throw it in the boot and not have to worry too much about anything getting damaged.

Hi all,

I have a few shots from the "Northern Lights" in Adelaide CBD last night... the result from getting some of the beautiful historic buildings and projecting massive images onto the facades. The images changed every 5 mins on each of the buildings and some of them were awesome...

Hopefully some shots to come from the fireworks tonight.

-Scott

Some nice art there, musta taken them a while to get the projectors set up right (if thats what they were using?) i guess its a similar thing to what they did to the opera house not long ago.

I saw it already, helped me chose this case thanks!

Honestly my use for this case may change in the future, but one thing i am pretty sure about is that i will always have a use for it, such a versatile case, esp with the padded dividers.

@Scott,very nice, pity about ppl but thats the joy of public displays.

@Amsm,very different and interesting, although you can have the drains.

@Al,moody sort of a shot, the first thing that sprang to mind when I saw it was....Pulp Fiction. Nice pick up with the farrier at least horses are easier to work with than say cats. Does he use a forge etc if so should get some good shots with flame etc.
