They are common enough in Rockhampton (300 odd km south of Mackay)

I've still yet to see one in the wild. My parents live about an hour south of Mackay (near Cape Palmerston). There are signs up on the cape about crocs, but last time I ventured down there, none were to be seen. Next visit I'm going to try to find one. :)

Getting one this weekend I hope, if I am going to use it with my 2yo son (who touches lenses a lot), I will use a Marumi Super DHG protector.

Big fan of marumi CPLs too..

Got to page 10... it got too offtopic so I didn't continue.

Unless you're gonna tell me it gets back on track :D

Maybe I should sell all my gear and buy an S90. I doubt my photos would suffer from the change.

Mine hasn't :-)

Filters = bad.

+1

Well filters for the sake of "protection" - definitely not worth the money and frequently effect image quality.

Oh sure, I don't mean ND/Grad ND/CPL, etc.

I agree for day to day use, but I have one for some bad environments. Works well if most of your lenses use the same size filter, at least I just need one..

I already have some cute photos of my 2yo son with the 16-35 up real close and in a few he is touching (or almosst) the front element (filter) and glad it wasn't really the front element. (grotty little fingers ;-)a ) Seaspray is another situation that comes to mind..

Hey Bruce.

Just use the lens hood instead. Filters are a bit of a waste as they do often affect constrast and can induce lens flare. The front element of a lens is quite a resilient piece of glass so be sure to blow it out before cleaning with a soft cloth.

The front element is much stronger, more everything-proof than you think, and certainly moreso than any filter you could put on there. I wouldn't worry in the slightest about grubby kiddy-prints.

The only situation I'd worry about is say, flying sand on a windy day at the beach or something, and if it was bad enough to need a filter, I'd probably not take my camera there at all.
