The only situation I'd worry about is say, flying sand on a windy day at the beach or something, and if it was bad enough to need a filter, I'd probably not take my camera there at all.

What about the salt spray when at the seaside (esp rocky outcrops), I normally put a filter on there and it has a lovely salty mist when I get home and look at it..

Take a soft cloth with you. The salt won't do anything to the lens however the electronics inside may have something to say about that and if salt is getting inside the lens a filter will not seal the lens against that.

+1

The mist isn't just on the beach either, you can see it go for hundreds of meters into the air. My 'rents live down near the beach (500m away) down the surfcoast and everything rusts in matter of days rather than years. That salt spray is nasty, let it dry and you get salt, nice bit of sandpaper there. No surface coating will last long with that.

Yeah I live in (vain?) hope the dust and drip sealing keeps salt mist out too ;-)a

Don't worry about it. You'll get so many years of use from your equipment before anything bad like that happens. Just roll with it and wipe down your gear when you get back home. The images you capture are worth more than any lens ever will be.

BTW: Tax with my new 50mm 1.4 care of Bruce...on the beach, no hood, no filter. ;)

I'd contact Dell if it's that close, they're often pretty good about it.

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

looking for some advice. On sunday very near me there is going to endro horse ride. The ride itself is not that important but I would like to use it as a dry run for the Tom Quilty which is going to be held on the same track ( or very similar ) in 2011 and I'm looking for ideas on how to make it look better than happy snaps. Thanks in advance.

and for all the city people the tom quilty is 100 miles (160 km) in 24 hours endro ride.

Nice Al. the pic not the link!

DF, these rides have early early starts and often late finishes, so off camera lighting is the key to beating the happy snaps, as is narrow depth of field. To master OCF by Sunday is a tough call. That being said, you have shown with some of your tax you can use the natural light to your advantage! You may also want to think about dragging the shutter to bring some movement into the shots as well.

Steam rising from the horse at the check points, pensive looks by supporters etc, build the story book.

BTW is the Tom Quitly a sound suppressed event of the Tom Quilty????:lol::lol:;)

Composition is your friend, no, more than that, its your oxygen. So 1000 snaps are ok but 10 thought out and composed shots would be the aim!
