I was going to ask this in a new thread in the lens forum, but I didn't want to deal with stupid replies and the like. It's just popped into my mind (less than a third of the way into my final essay for philosophy, of course).

I've read that L lenses without weather-sealing just means it doesn't have that final cover over the metal at the mount end. If the link works, see this for comparison: http://the-digital-picture.com …=103&Go.x=5&Go.y=10&Go=Go (external link). 70-200 non-IS vs IS, right before the lens cap you'll see silver on the non-IS and black on the IS. Is that actually the only difference in weather sealing on the lenses, or are there further differences under the focus/zoom rings and the like? I was just thinking that if it was raining, all I had to do to weather-seal the lens is, say, use gaffer tape around the mount to cover that silver ring of a lens?

I doubt that makes sense to many, but we'll see

I see there are a bunch of guys into 4wd offroading here. My mates are starting up a business selling rear view cameras for 4wd, you have any recommendations where a good place to advertise for them is?

Maybe they could try a 4wd forum, become a site sponsor etc.

cameras with screens ? Mine already has a reversing camera, but I've been considering mounting another on the bullbar to a second screen mounted on the dash so I can see over a crest.

But as for your question, try enquiring with 4wd action, outer limits, pradopoint, etc forums.

I suspect there's sealing around the moving parts like zoom and focus rings, 'round the front element and the rubber seal on the mount.

Only on the lenses with the weather-sealed label or both? What you mentioned is what I thought could be missing in the non-weather-sealed lenses (apart from the rubber seal on the mount), but to leave out the rest of the sealing seems wrong.

There's a reasonably active forum at 4wdmonthly.com.au

Well I would assume that if it's not a weather sealed lens, they'd not bother putting any of the sealing in to save on production costs and weight.

Having said that, my 400/5.6L is supposedly not weather-sealed, but has been in the rain with no ill effects.

I was under the impression that the 70-200/4 non-IS was the only non-weathersealed L. I could be wrong however.
