They were 492' long, and we did take water over the bow occasionally, but mostly, we'd just lay over on one side, then the other. I always felt a little sympathy for the troops on board. Most of the time they were restricted to their compartments when we were in heavy seas, and these ships weren't air conditioned. I suspect there were plenty of little green men to be seen.... Chet showed up to keep the place interesting More info | Feb 03, 2010 19:41 | #3384 Dang went to Art's camera center, the local camera shop near me to get 13x19 paper for my HP printer. Really wanted the HP Premium Plus paper that works so nice on the HP photo printers. All they had was Canon, Ilford and Promaster paper. The guy recommended the Promaster paper. I'm disappointed I didn't order the HP paper online. The colors are wrong, and the blacks are muddy. I did print a 5x7 on the printer using the HP paper and it was awesome. The print size is wicked awesome though.

Woolburr wrote in post #9535443 My favorite moment was taking a wave over the flight deck....one of the helo crews got a shot of it....but I have yet to find a copy online. The bridge of a carrier gives you a totally different sensation than you get on the bridge of a conventional ship. With the island structure being off-set from the centerline....the motion is hard to describe. I guess in my mind I feel the motion of a conventional bridge to be somewhat oval shaped.....while a carrier is more egg shaped, with the fat part of the egg to starboard. ![]() One thing that surprised me when I was on the Reagan was how much the island structure shook when they launched an F-18 off one of the bow catapults... Most of the time they were restricted to their compartments when we were in heavy seas, and these ships weren't air conditioned. My first ship was a conventionally powered submarine and as such, couldn't ride out a storm submerged. We hit a gale coming back from Japan in 1967 while on a great circle track (Dan will know what that means) that took us near the Aleutian Islands. That was the open bridge I mentioned above... Did you see that shock wave and hear all the secondary detonations of what sounded like small arms ammunition cooking off? John
