Woodpecker was on the suet this morning and finches were on the feeder I moved next to the house where the thistle seed sock was. So I took pictures solely for the purpose of ID'ing them. Stoopid twig blocked the bill of the woodpecker but I see no spots on the outer tail feathers so I'm think it is a Hairy Woodpecker. Since the eye patch is pretty much a line yet, I'm thinking a juvenile. Once I see the bill, I'll know for sure, though it is feasible we may have both. The finch is up for debate yet as to whether it is a house or purple finch. The winter plumage just isn't distinctive enough to be positive.

Now that I have bored you all terribly...please, carry on.

You likely have both. Once you get to know them they are very easy to distinguish by size. Hairy Woodpeckers are larger.

That is great news, Crissa.

Hairys are bigger overall, too. They're about the size of a small Robin or Mockingbird, a tad bigger than a Cardinal; Downys are about a large sparrow in size.

Thanks for this comparison, Jon. This particular one would definitely be a Hairy.

Tis true. The Hairy Woodpeckers are slightly bigger. Not as big as the Whopping Great Lump Woodpecker or the Bust Your Windshield Woodpecker, which is one of the biggest woodpeckers in North America. Of course, none of those woodpeckers are as big as the Costa Rican, "By the Hammer of Thor, Look At The Size Of That Woodpecker".

That's a big woodpecker.

Evening folks. Quick check in while dinner is preparing.

No baby as of yet....though wifey had some sharp contraction pains mid-day...and only once so far today.

Woolburr wrote in post #9662854 (external link)
Hope the bambino doesn't decide to make an appearance mid-snowstorm!

Thank goodness he didn't!
Evan was born on a day that was pouring rain!

Night Bobert. Hope Evan feels better and the baby does NOT come in the snowstorm.

Thanks Lisa, Evan is still sick :(. On his 3rd day out of school....bad, bad, bad cough and mucus.

One of my favourite lenses with the tubes is a 70-200. It works great. The zoom works like a focus with it too.

I know these are old photos I have shown before, some over 4 1/2 years old. All taken with the 20D, tubes and the 70-200.

SPIDER WARNING!!!!

Great set-o-shots Jim. Especially the daddy long legs.

Wow, quite the showing in the book.

Great shot Tiff. I saw all the back and forth on the PP and eye sharpening 'n stuff....but I do have to say for some reason her right eye to me looks like its a fake eye. I think due to the tear duct side.

G.daughter Alex has been with us since the 13th. Tomorrow we take her back to her parents in Snohomish. She's a lot of fun, and at the same time, a lot of work.

Lovely eyes your granddaughter has Sid.

He is in Monterrey at tech school for the next 16 months. He's learning Arabic and has now signed up to be in the Air Force special forces. Kid has me worried.

Though there are many different jobs in the Air Force Special Forces, if he is choosing Pararescue (PJs) he'll be coming back to San Antonio for initial training. That's where they weed out folks....something like an 85% washout rate  There is a great documentary done by Discovery I think which followed one class through their initial schooling (aka pysc quals) and swimming here on Lackland. I think FAC training may start there too. When I'd visit the school to talk to the guys for their background checks, I was always impressed. Tough guys they are.

It is so cool, that you know what to look for. When I am watching birds my dialogue goes something like this:

ooooo....lookit the blue one!
*gasp* The yellow one! Holy moly it is bright!

HOCK!! Did you SEE that big black one??

I'm not sure exactly what the kid is thinking. His tech school is crypt-linguist but evidently there is something else that they are offering. I'm sure I'll hear more in the coming weeks.

There are crypt-linguist in buildings and crypt-linguist in the air....like on AWACS type aircraft. He probably means in the air.

That's what he originally signed on for but then he found out that the air guys get stuck at suckey bases so he switched. Not sure what this latest thing is though.

 I would think that non-air guys got stuck at sucky bases....you know, being in a building ALL day with no windows.
Anyhow, here is a good link with info on the air side of the job http://answers.yahoo.com …qid=20091220223656AAO53P9 (external link).
