Is the focus O.K ?
Is the exposition O.K ?
Is the picture sharp enough ?

Used a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II.

Hi Nick, welcome to POTN.

Lovely capture, focus is nicely on the eyes and the exposure is pretty much spot on. Unfortunately the bright light behind is causing some nasty chromatic aberration around the ear. Also, have you softened this in any way as the mouth looks a bit too soft?

Otherwise a great start for a noob! :D

Thank you !

There was a lot of light coming from the window and I had to work with the ambiant light. I didn't notice the chromatic aberration, but now that you are talking about it, I see it.

I didn't softened the mouth, maybe should I use a aperture of F/2.8 next time ?

Nick,

Welcome. Mike is right about the light... it not only causes the chromatic aberration, but - because your eye is naturally drawn to the lightest part of the photo - it also draws attention away from the main subject. I also suspect that your camera has tried not to blow the window out too much, and as a result has over compensated for the rest of the photo and slightly underexposed the cat.

A golden rule that has saved many, many of my own shots is to "check the corners before your press the trigger" - in other words, check the background for distractions. Next time, maybe move a little to the left so that the window is out of shot. The cat will turn its head to follow you - if it feels safe - so you'll still get the shot.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I'll try different angles next time.

You're welcome.

I actually don't mind the mouth like that to be honest so I wouldn't worry. ;)
