I'm looking to get into some IR landscape shooting but I have no clue what filter to get. I've read that the R72 is a good one, but I'm not sure as to what brand or whatnot to get. I've seen some from $30 to $300. I'm really wanting to get into this, so if anyone knows of anything please help. Thanks

I had purchased the Hoya R72 at one point in time and it was ok. You are shooting essentially blind at the filter is basically black. Your exposures are long and you have to work from a tripod. I was always bothered by that so I ended up getting my 10D converted to permanent IR and was so happy with that that my 5D is off getting the same thing done to it. There are a few companies out there offering this service but I went with LifePixel. As far as your filter goes, I would probably stick to brand names if it were me. I'm not saying you have to buy the most expensive but I wouldn't go with the 30.00 one either. You still have to touch these in photoshop after the fact. Basically involves playing around with the channel mixer.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Well, I just purchased an R72 filter for now until I can afford another camera. I think I'm going to shoot to get a 20D and then switch it over to IR only. Seems like that is the way to go. I paid $40 on the filter so hopefully it works well. Thanks for the info ssim. I really appreciate your time.

I tried an R72 filter for a bit, then sold it and had an older 10D converted by Lifepixel as well. Since your 40D has Live View, you should be able to attach the filter and focus using LV (no need to shoot "blind" as with a non-LV camera). I say "should" since I'm able to focus with LV on my 5D2 when using a 10-stop ND filter. If you can, then you wouldn't need to focus first and attach the filter afterwards. This would make things easier, but you'll still need to be prepared for long exposure times, making a tripod pretty much mandatory. A filter could be a cheap way to see if you like IR photography...if you do, the next logical step would be to do a body conversion (makes life much easier).
