FlexTT5/MiniTT1 and Sekonic L358/RT32 Frustration

I totally appreciate that my problems are user error (mine) but I cannot for the life of me get my FlexTT5/MiniTT1 (Canon) to be triggered by my Sekonic L358. All are CE versions

More than likely I've assumed incorrectly that I can just set the Sekonic L358 to Ch. 1, set my FlexTT5 to C1 and I should be good to go ... unfortunately not :(

I have 2 FlexTT5s and 1 MiniTT1 and all are set to the basic factory settings via the PocketWizard utility (ie I haven't changed anything) and I'm running the latest firmware version.

It would be really appreciated if someone more learned in this than me (which wouldn't be hard) point me in the right direction on how best to set this up

The Sekonic manual isn't that clear on how to set up the Channel, so I'm assuming when you select the channel it blinks (1 in my case) and then you hold the mode button down and turn the scroll wheel to return it to radio trigger mode does in fact set the channel ?

Is there a setting in the PocketWizard utility that I have overlooked

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated :D

From page 24 of the manual, "Receiving channel: A FlexTT5 Transceiver can only receive on one channel at a time. It receives on *either* a ControlTL *or* a Standard channel, not both simultaneously."

What you are describing as channel 1 is really configuration 1 and probably set to receive on a control channel rather than a standard channel. The sekonic will be transmitting on a standard channel and the TT5 will be listening by default on a control channel. As a result the TT5 will not hear the sekonic.

If you don't have a PW Plus II unit so that the MiniTT1 and/or the FlexTT5 units can "learn" from the Plus II to transmit/receive on the standard channel the Sekonic transmitter is set to, you will need to use the PW Utility to set the MiniTT1/FlexTT5 units to the same channel as the Sekonic transmitter. As was previously mentioned, those units, by default, only receive on the Control Channel frequencies and the Sekonic transmits on the Standard Channel frequencies.

From Flickr:

Tom, I think I can answer this for you. In configuration 1, I have the Flex set to transmit TL on Channel 1 and standard on Channel 2. I've checked use ControlTL for Rx channel. ControlTL Rx channel is set to 1. The Tx channels are set the same in Configuration 2, but use ControlTL Rx channel is not set. Standard Rx Channel is set to 2 in Configuration 2.

Now Flex units supporting TTL should be set to Configuration 1, Flex units supporting flashes in manual mode should be set to configuration 2.

If you use the same channels as I, your sekonic should be set to channel 2.

I set the Flex unit on my camera to Configuration 1, the remote flashes in manual mode are on Flex units set to configuration 2 and the remote TTL flashes are connected to Flex units in configuration 1.

My flash units in manual mode work fine. As I reported in an earlier link, my TTL flashes leave a curtain band on my image when I use a Canon 7D.

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

BTW, here's a screen shot of the PW Utility where and what (circled in red) you specify the receiver channel to use to work with your Sekonic flash meter, assuming you're using Standard channel 1. If not, set the channel number accordingly.

Just don't forget to set the FlexTT5 back to the ControlTL channel if you want to use an EX flash in E-TLL mode on top of the FlexTT5. Or, as was suggested in one of the posts above, you can set C1 to receive on a ControlTL channel and C2 on a Standard channel (or vice versa).

OK, just an update ... everything is working fine now, and as I suspected, user error was the cause ;)

Just to confirm one point though, the Sekonic won't trigger the flash if its set in ETTL mode, only in Manual ?

That is correct, the flash must be set to "manual" in order for the Sekonic to trigger it.

As an addendum, triggering older flashes like the 550 with TT5s attached using the TT1 won't work, in general if they're off-camera. It's a known bug that I only found out about this morning, when I was going mad :-)
