I shoot using my 5DmkII and am looking at a second camera to be both backup and as a second video cam on more complex shoots.

I wonder if anyone here has used both together and assuming the picture styles are the same etc are the results from both similar? I know DOF etc will be different.

Cheers

Mike

I think the biggest difference is that the 7D can do 720p60fps since it has two DigiC IV processors. I doubt the 5Dii will ever be able to do that. I've not seen any comparisons between the two cameras, though.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

I think the biggest difference you'll see is in ultra low light where the 5D will obviously require a little less ISO bump and also in extreme thin DOF shots. However the 7D has more framerate choices and depending on when Canon will ever release the firmware update for the 5D to get more choices; then I'd take the framrate over the low light and DOF advantage of the 5D. It never hurts to have a cropper and a FF'r. ;)

The preview for the 5dmkii firmware update showed that it could. Computationally, 720p is less than half as complex as 1080p, so there's no reason why the 5dmkii can't do 720p at 60fps, or the 7d doing more than 60fps (could probably do 1080p at 60fps). The main limitation seems to be the sensor at this point, not the processing (18mp*8fps=144mp/s, 1080p = 2mp * 60fps = 120mp/s. Throw in the fact it has hardware support for h264, and add some overhead, and you can definitely see 1080p having 60fps on the 7d).

Video wise, no, they are not the same, and putting video from both sources may lead to a desync of the audio. 5dmkii shoots in non-drop frame 30fps, 7d shoots in drop-frame 30fps (29.97, means for every 1001 frames, you only record 1000). The new firmware update should fix that whenever it comes out.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

OK, that's helpful but maybe I wasn't being clear enough:

Does the image, ie, the look, of the footage match? Can two cameras - once the sync issue is resolved - be mixed and look the same?

Of course the DOF will be different but the look of the two needs to be the same for me.

In the past I had a Canon XL 1 and a PD 150. They looked very different and it was a mistake not having two of the same cams.

Cheers!

Other than the frame rate issue (more or less fine as long as you stick to 30s clips, even longer clips are fine if you just use something to drop a frame so the audio doesn't get screwed up), the two cameras should look more or less the same color wise. Can't really speak for both though, only 7d video I have is from b&h testing

the main concern w/ matching footage w/ any video-camera is the white balance and t1i, 7d, and 5DII is the same to me, if not exactly the same WB. other than that, audio and whatnot isn't a concern.

So...the new firmware is out an there's no 720p/60fps. There you go. ;)

Doesn't make my comments any less true. 60fps IS possible, just wasn't implemented this time around. Perhaps for 2.1.0.
