I would like to be able to do something with the vids from my 7D, cheap of course. Basic stuff. Anyone?

I'm no fancy videographer, so I'm sure others can give you better, more "powerful" editing recommendations. But I find that the Roxio Creator 2010 program I use is more than sufficient to convert, clip, and add basic stuff for my usage.

I guess the question is, how cheap is "cheap" enough for you?

I think you can do some basic chopping in ZoomBrowser, don't know if it assembles the bits again but you can do that in Windows Movie Maker, and that comes free ( well with XP it did)

I assembled a load of images into a slide show using it and added a soundtrack here

Adobe Premiere elements is pretty good. It's like $75 in the US or you can buy it bundled with Photoshop Elements for about $100

i work at a student newspaper and my assistant was so excited when he got a 7D. Then the video editor told him that they couldn't edit HD footage without upgrading to Final Cut Pro and he went from :) to :(

Sony Vegas Movie Studio
Adobe Premeire Elements
Apple Final Cut Studio Studio

All reasonably priced... I wouldn't bother with anything other than these 3

Premiere is a good choice, I quite like it.

Apple do make the cheaper final cut also... but I don't really like final cut compared to Premiere or Vegas

+1 for Pemiere Elements.

Please speak slowly and distinctly. I have a wife and a computer, I don't need any more confusion in my life.

If I am not mistake you do not have to shot in 1080P on the 7D, so there may be video options the editor could manage.

You can go down to 720p or 640p... but you're restricted to 50fps PAL or 60fos NTSC... so not ideal for people who want 24p.

I'd just upgrade software... i mean even movie-maker can handle HD now.

I love Sony Vegas. I've been using Pro for a couple of years now, but before that I used the Studio version for a while and it's very powerful for a budget program and does much of what Vegas Pro does for a lot less. It's a nice little suite with video editing tools, DVD authoring tools, and (depending on version) even some basic tools for adding customized music to your videos. Make sure that you get the HD version if you buy it, they make a few different ones based on features (in different colored boxes). The most expensive one is around $120 I think, so still not too bad. If I'm not mistaken, the middle of the road version is the first one that will edit HD video, and it's around $90-100.
