My first pro digital camera purchased early January 2000: Nikon 1D 2.7 MP: $4999
10 years later: Canon iD MK IV, same price: $4999
Thought I would share this info. Amazing how technology has progressed.

Well in Oct 2000 I paid nearly £200 for a 48MB CF card, and nearly £700 for a 2MP digital Ixus, and that's without VAT...:

The Ixus still works BTW...!

Yes it is really amazing to see the price remain the same and how much more tech you get. And also not taking into account the difference in the buying power of the Dollar. With inflation this equals $6414

That's why some believe that, beyond a certain point in camera technology, it would be better to put the money in lenses than to continually upgrade the camera. The 20D of ages past for example, would still work wonders for the bulk of photographers.

Yes indeed, it is amazing how perspectives change, particularly in areas in which technology is on a steep and rapid climb. In 2001, I got my first digital, an Olympus 30xx PS, with 3.2MP (IIRC). I love it, and it really took great pictures, so long as you didn't need to enlarge them much. For years I distantly coveted the newer 5, 6, and 7MP cameras as they came along. And now, somehow, 5MP is archaic, crude, and not worth the bother...

Depends on whether the earlier body was actually completely acceptable for one's work in the first place. The 20D could only accomplish part of my work satisfactorily--it was never fully suitable for what I do. The 5D2 does it all.

Wow I feel sad for anyone still paying of a credit card bill for a 2mp DSLR

And yes it's funny how my newly acquired 20D cost half as much as my Sony superzoom P&S did in 2006.

I paid $620.00 Australian Dollars for a Sony DSC-P8 3.2MP point and shoot in 2003..

In 1986 (if I remember correctly) I paid $1800.00 for a Nikkor AI-S 300mm f/2.8IF ED lens..
