Thank you.

Just a letter on a lens in my opinion.
There is nothing in particular that designates an L on the lens other than Canon says so.

Why yes, I am a jerk. Thank you for asking.

wow i did not know this:

Did you know that Canon sells white L Series touchup paint? Although it is not cheap ($14.41 for 100g plus $8.00 or so for shipping), you can order it through Canon Parts. The part number is CY9-8078-001. The phone number to order in the US is 1-732-521-7230.

hilarious .. wonder how many they sold!

Thank you.

L's also generally enjoy better support from Canon if for no other reason than they tend to survive bad falls and designed for the shooting pros.

They tend to be noticeably smoother control rings and faster, more precise AF. Weather sealing.

There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealing's done

Not all L's will have weather sealing but they all generally have better optics/glass, newer IS systems (as with the 100L macro and the upcoming 70-200 f2.8 IS II), better build quality (better material actually), etc...
