I really quick question for those of you with 7D's.

With my 7D the pop up flash doesn't pop up, If I have had a speedlight attached at any stage while the camera is turned on.

So I need to turn the camera off, turn it back on and then it will pop up.

Is this normal? Because to be honest I can't actually remember this happening before with my camera.

If a Speedlite is connected, the pop up flash should not pop up. There is a little lever/ pedal in the hot shoe that is depressed when a flash is mounted thus telling the camera to not pop up the flash. If you take off the flash you can see it by viewing the hotshoe from an angle. So to answer your question yes, this is normal behaviour. It should mention this in your user manual.

What mode are you shooting in? It will only automatically pop up in the "full auto" modes, and not in the P,Av,Tv,M modes. You have to push the little lightning bolt button for it to pop up in those modes. That's part of taking control over your images and getting to choose whether or not the flash pops up in the more advanced modes.

Either that, or that little switch mentioned above gets stuck sometimes, causing the on-board flash to think the speedlite is still attached. It happens sometimes and is easy to fix. There are threads here (or just google it) about repairing it if you find out that's the problem.

Thanks for your responses.

I guess my question wasn't the clearest.

Once I have had a speedlight connected to the hotshoe and it has been removed the pop up flash won't work when I press the button, like nothing happens.

There's a micro-switch in the hot shoe so the flash doesn't pop up when there's an external one mounted. Sounds like that may be getting stuck when you insert a flash.

Have you verified to make sure that the little lever/ pedal is not stuck?

The little lever could be stuck, or there could be some sort of mechanical/electronic issue where you have to restart your camera to "reset" it. Should probably send it to Canon to get it check

Ever so happy with my 1D classic
