What and How,,,,,,,,,???????

3 months certainly won't be enough to become a pro, but it's plenty to get consistently decent pictures if she's motivated enough to learn how to use a DSLR properly. As others have suggested, it'll take a lot of reading, taking pictures, reviewing them, and trying again. Here's how my initial learning progressed:

1st month: No idea what I was doing. Pictures were consistently horrible.
2nd month: Results got better as I learned how to properly set ISO, SS, and aperture. I started getting used to my lenses and knowing what their limitations were.
3rd month: Felt confident enough to shoot at a large school event as a volunteer. Many shots came out all right, and with basic PP (cropping, WB, exposure) many more came out nicely
4th month: Basic skills got better, albeit at a slower rate. I picked up an OCF and started playing with that

Boy!!!!!! A lot of you jumped right in the middle of my case,,,,,,,,,,,maybe I shouldn't have asked without laying some up front pathways that exist but at this point it seems it would not be the thing to do as you have formed your opinions in this regard.

I don't know what you are taking offense to. Maybe a couple of comments could be taken the wrong way. You asked. All anyone can do is to form their opinion based on the information that was presented. If there was more to the story that may have impacted how people formed their response that should have been given in the original post.

I am going to agree with most others here. 3 months should be adequate for her to be able to get decent shots. She doesn't need to know the camera inside out, she needs to know enough to take some vacation type pictures. There is obviously some history here that we don't know and at this point the responses are in and you are disappointed that more did not support your point of view.

There are many jobs that are technical of nature and the probationary period is only 3 or 6 months. If a person puts their mind to it the human brain can learn an amazing amount of information in a short period of time. Remember cramming for test. A ton of info in a short period of time and you hope like hell you remember it all.

It would seem to me that she has not made this decison un-informed. She has discounted that she doesn't want a point and shoot. You didn't say that she asked what you thought but did say that you told her what you thought, which is just fine imo. It matters not whether it is a Canon or Nikon and at this point I certainly wouldn't be trying her to go with our brand.

If there is something more to this that would have changed most of the answers, please share with us. We can only go on what we know.
