I came across 2 Gitzo tripods,;GK 2580 TQR comes with ball head for around $700.00 (used) and Gitzo GT 2530 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fibre for around $550.00 (used). Which one is the better buy for my need. I am looking for a tripod which is sturdy, compact and light weight.I use Canon 100-400 mm lens. Thanks for your advice.

You used to be able to buy 2530 Mountaineer new for US$530 without head (2007 B&H)...what head is being provided for that price?

Gitzo recommendation is that the 2xxx is good for up to and including 300mm; the 3xxx is better for greater FL, but your need for light weight might preclude that.

Your best buy is to go to Adorama and get a brand new GT2531 for $539.90. $550 for a used 2530 is absolutely ridiculous. $700 for a used GK2580TQR is also too much. You can buy it new from Adorama for $749.95. (I don't know anything about the head that comes in this kit, but the tripod is a GT2540.)

I'd recommend that you buy your legs separate (and new, if these are the best prices you can find). I've never really heard anything about Gitzo ballheads, and while I'm sure they're perfectly adequate, you can get adequate cheaper, or great for the same price.

As already stated, you are better buying new. Although Gitzo makes excellent tripods, their ballheads are nothing special. You are better off looking at others such as Markins, RRS, Kirk, etc.
