430EX AF assist beam

I looked through the manual, and unless I totally missed it, cannot find any information regarding the use of the AF assist beam without the flash firing. I figured it might be helpful in low light situations where you want to assist focus, but not necessarily have the flash fire...

yes it can be done via the custom function menu. Its CF 7 on my camera (30D with sigma 500 super), simply change "flash firing" from "fires" to "does not fire". And ensure CF 5 "AF-assist beam" is set to "on" :)

Note that this is not a function of the flash, but the camera. So the same flash supports this on newer cameras, but not on older models.
