Its CF 7 on my camera (30D with sigma 500 super), simply change "flash firing" from "fires" to "does not fire". And ensure CF 5 "AF-assist beam" is set to "on" 40D || 18-55 IS || 55-250 IS || 580EXII

apersson850 Cream of the Crop  More info | Note that this is not a function of the flash, but the camera. So the same flash supports this on newer cameras, but not on older models. Anders
