Correction: the date of this show was 1/22/10...I could not change the title.

A little bit over 35 years ago, performing artist Harry Chapin took close to an hour explaining to a 15 year old boy how hunger could be eradicated in our lifetime. The 15 year old boy was me and it started a long history of my advocacy for hunger relief causes. Soon after Harry and Bill Ayers found World Hunger Year (WHY) which is the umbrella organization for a large amount of food banks and hunger relief charities. Just recently WHY has been rebranded WHY Hunger to better get it's message across. You can find out more about WHY Hunger at www.whyhunger.org (external link) I have another WHY event to post from a few months ago and am working on a major project for them in the coming months as well as some more benefit shows.

Last Saturday night the band moe. donated 100% of it's time and proceeds to WHY Hunger. They also invited a few friends, who also donated their time, along to help them put on a wonderful set of music.

Marco Benvenuto (Benvenuto/Russo - keyboards)
Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers Band - drums)
Jeff Austin (Yonder Mountain String Band - mandolin)
David Sanborn (jazz alto saxphone great)
Danny Barnes (Bad Livers - banjo)

This was an easy and tough shoot at the same time. Mostly backlit, the intensity of the lighting was constantly changing so good exposures were the exception to under and over exposures. Still I think I got a good share of keepers and wish I was able to show a few more to give everyone the scope of the event and lighting effects.

As always, comments and critique are appreciated.

Definitely a solid set Tony. I really like the lights in #4.

EDIT: BTW great story about Harry Chapin and the eradication of world hunger. Sounds like he was far more than a gifted songwriter.

moe. always has great lighting but also intense. Like you said easy and hard all at once.

Good set of photos.

#7 needs to be slightly rotated counter clockwise though, it just looks off to me.

Pretty tough lighting for photography and reminds me of why I love the four high power follow spots that casino has.

If you ever retire and need a replacement Dwight just give me a holler and I'll be on a plane!

I am going to retire in another year or two, but that is from the University ... then I'll be doing photography full time. But you know, Richard, you can always hop a plane and come stay with us for a week or two ... and bring you SO, too!

Harry, to this day, effects many of the people that he spoke to. Bruce Springsteen told a story that nailed the power of Harry. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEvimXwEGgs (external link)

I have at least 15 other shots of various lighting sets that night. Amazing texture.

Thank you. It was a bit humbling and frustrating binning over 50% of the shots that night. I will check out #7 and adjust it a bit later.

It is also a lot of fun going out of the comfort zone, Dwight. I get that casino level lighting with Springsteen almost to the point of not being challenging.

Allergic reaction on my part because of the blues in #1. ;)

#2 (pity about the guitarist), 6 and 8 are nice though.
