The shadows would work as a design element for me in #3 & 4 if you cropped out most of the sky. FrankC - 20D, RAW, Manual everything...

(that RV in the last pic is a dead giveaway) If so, it would have been harder to shoot from the other side and achieve a decent background. I'd try switching directions and head northbound if you wanted to shoot from the other side. Or shoot the same direction, but at sunrise instead of sunset. That is, if take other people advice that this is the "wrong" side. It appears to me that you were going for the flare look in your shots, since all of them were shot that way. Gear List
