Hi everyone,

I spent a few hours in the 'Doghouse' blind shooting Californian Quail in the weekend. I got a surprise when I saw a Weasel scamper past the front of the blind at a hundred miles an hour. Little buggers never stop. I watched him climb a tree nearby and up into the top branches about three metres off the ground. Kept watching but never actually saw him come down. I went over and had a squizz up in the branches as I was leaving and discovered a Waxeye's nest. They are completely closed in bar a golf ball-sized entrance. Right in the 'doorway' I could see this ..........

He'd obviously 'commandeered' it off the Waxeyes and made it his own. He eventually scarpered so I went back the next day armed with a bit of fish meal and a couple of pilchards. He came by fleetingly and stopped only briefly, enough for a burst of three shots, one of which came out well considering it was only 1/50th of a second.

Matt.

Wow... often heard about but rarely seen. Poor waxeye family though... I can only assume that any eggs in the nest made a tasty meal for the mustelid.

That second shot is a stunner!
I have only seen one of these in the wild in the 15+ years I have been shooting wildlife photos.
Rare indeed
