How long should one of these last? I'm looking to buy an apple display and I was wondering the life span on these. Or I could pic up a nice, not the cheapy, Dell monitor fir about half the price.

20 years. Dells use the same guts (on some) that Apple does. I used to have a studio with 6 20" ones, now I'm smaller and have only a 30 and 23. Wouldn't sell them for anything.

Monitors last a long time. The one on my gaming PC (built it about six years ago) just died and I left it on all the time, plus it only cost 125 bucks.

I'm more talking about it's ability to hold true and not dim or have color issues. Has any one had any of these apple displays over 3 years and if so how is it holding up?

My apple display at home is almost 5 years old. Still great. At work, a lot older and still looks good, granted they are calibrated every so often

Every monitor will slightly change over time. It is just physics. That is why you get a color calibrator.

And that is why color calibrators (most at least) remind you to re-calibrate every month or so, if not more often.

Don't waste your money on the ACD. Both the 2408WFP and U2410 are rated higher in terms of quality. I've had a 2408WFP for a bit over two years now, and it's just as (overly) bright as when I got it. No tinting issues or bad pixes either.

Fading and color shifting is less an issue with flat panels than older CRTs. Like I sai, if you want cheaper, look to Dell (and maybe Hp). Depends if you like plastic frames and jerky pivots. Apple has lowered its pricing to be much closer than Dell.

My 23" is 3 years old and my 30 ACD is 5. No change from day 1. I have both a older Spyder unit and a new EFI system that calibrates my output as well.

Looks like you haven't used either company in a while. Dell's pivots are two axis (three DOF in some models like the 2408WFP) and counterbalanced (also supports VESA mounting). Apple has one pivot, so can't use it portrait mode without buying a (non-VESA, since it isn't supported, mounting bracket). Both companies make the monitors using a metal frame with a polymer (Apple uses a glossier surface than dell does for most monitors) outer shell. Stylistically, the monitors are quite different, but the quality is top notch with both.

I have to agree. Apple displays are nothing super special. If anything, dell's monitor series looks as good if not better. I also like the black matte frame of the dell monitors more than the silver/white of apple.

Not only that, but from the ACD's that I've seen, you can't turn the brightness down to a point where it doesn't hurt your eyes. Can't be good for proofing the whiteness of paper either.

Can you not turn the brightness of the back-light down from within a mac though? I am pretty sure I can on my laptop.

That would be a deal negation for me right there if true that you couldn't and if I were making the purchase decision.

You can, but not enough to get to the recommended 120

Of course you can.
