or you could do this...
2. Gel flash with Plusgreen filter, then shoot Fluorescent balance

I would do that too, but what about the relevance of this post? https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=460248

Very relevant. The fundamental issue is that fluorescent output is all over the map for color balance and tint (green-magenta axis of color spectrum) and no single combination of filters fixes all situations best!

In Curtis's example, I'm only using the 1/2 Plusgreen, I thought of mixing a 1/2 CTO on it but I don't know which type of WB settings to apply on camera too. So I stick with the Plusgreen gel. Now I end up color correcting even more on PP. I should've researched more before.

Sorry I should have expanded on the filter use a bit, I assumed that (I know, never assume!) the correction filter would be on the lens with the flash gelled up to match the ambient lighting.
I still don't understand why Canonboi needs to get so complicated with things - AWB with postprocessing seems the easiest way to go for this type of family photo. I find that AWB does a fair job, (you can also do a custon WB off a gray/white card and see if that's better), but perhaps I'm not using the same cameras.
As the files are RAW's I see even less of a problem with pp'ing them, so why introduce complications at the shooting stage?

Paul, I'm really happy for you, and I'ma let you finish, but doing it right from the camera is easiest way of doing things of all time.:D:p;)

Just kidding, man. That is true IF YOU KNOW what you're doing. In my case, nope. Or at least I thought I was doing it right, anyway.

We have all of us got things wrong - some of us more than once!
Like forgetting to put the film in before shooting (remember film?); or having the camera set to shoot without card, and then not putting a card in..............been there, done both.
The problem is that once you hit a way of working which suits you tend to forget that others have different ways of hitting the same target.
I agree with you that getting the balance right first off is the ideal but I would either just ask the subject to move somewhere away from the fluorescents - difficult with family though I guess, they aren't paying for the shoot! - or just rely on the flash to drown out the cast and then adjust in PP if necessary.

bannedPermanent ban

It'll be easier with a camera that lets you set the exact color temperature.
I know 5D has it... not sure about 7D. Those photos are green because the
automatic fluorescent correction probably isn't enough magenta.

Why do people put their gear list here?
Pro photogs usually have everything anyways.

Just need to say, I learned a lot in this thread already about gels and colour cast.

Thanks.
