WOW! Those are sick, amazing work. I can't help but wondering how on earth you managed to capture the insect while it's flying.

Thanks for the comments all. I am pretty chuffed with these myself, the only thing I am disappointed about is chopping the wing in the third one ... something to watch for next time :)

Hey Andy, those shots are tremendous!
PLEASE share your method, lenses/body combo and the number of shots you discarded before getting these....just so we know where to set the bar before giving up!

Gear used:

50D, EF 100mm f2.8, (extension tubes - 48mm or 56mm from memory - these guys were relatively small hovers), 580EXII with lumiquest softbox and an additional paper towel sticky taped to the front for further diffusion.

TV - 1/250th, f13 (#1&2) f11 (#3), ISO 400, Flash in manual mode 1/2 power from memory. manual focus set to minimum focus distance.

The HIF was taken using live view - much easier to track him and just use your arms to focus. Such a setup means there were plenty of missed shots - most frustrating being nailing the focus but having only half (or significantly less) of the flying hover in the frame :(

Don't ever give up ... just enjoy the hunt :)

Thanks so much for the info'.
I'm getting a 7D in a month or so, and was pondering on the extension tubes too....well, now you've made up my mind!
Just don't tell Missus Skygod, as she thought I'd settle this year with just the 7D (and the 200L2.8 I'm getting with it!)
;)
