Haha, right I've just received the following.

  • 580exII
  • 430exII
  • Giottos LC210 Light stand
  • Manfrotto Umbrella Adapter
  • Elinchrom 83cm Umbrella Set

How do I attach the speedlite to the umbrella adapter? I'm guessing I've missed something whilst reading about all this. I thought that the umbrella adapter would have somewhere for the speedlite to click onto and it doesn't! If it helps, this (external link) is what I've ordered. I've got the umbrella adapter attached to the light stand!

You need an umbrella swivel mount that has a cold shoe (like this one http://www.dealextreme.com ….dx/sku.32969~r..58547694 (external link) or this umbrella swivel mount http://www.mpex.com/browse.cfm/4,11776.html (external link) ). I have Umbrella Swivel mounts that are similar to both of those, the one I use the most is thone similar to the MPEX one, though I have used the Deal Extreme styled one a couple of times.

Do you have something to trigger flash?

I built cable by following instructions from strobist.com - very simple and cheap, but does get in way.
OR you can order a wireless from EBay such as RF-602 (search for that).

Thanks! I knew it would be something like this. I've just ordered an umbrella adapter with hot shoe now so hopefully I'll have more luck with that.

I've got a couple of options. I can mount the 580 and trigger the 430 with that, or I can use the cheap triggers I got from amazon (which are getting sent back for an exchange as the trigger does not work!)

I'm also considering a ST-E2 as I can also use it as a focus assist beam.

Since you already have the Manfrotto Umbrella Adapter, you only this part to hold the flash on top of the adapter.

Mark - That Manfrotto umbrella adapter's one of the better ones available. I think you'll be glad you chose it because of its strength. Instead of purchasing a whole new adapter I agree with "Mufutau" that you could easily just pickup a hot shoe plate to screw into the top of the Manfrotto. Quick-n-easy fix.

If you already have an umbrella adapter, you should have what you need.

I use the plastic feet that came with my Canon flashes and Bogen umbrella adapter and they are just fine.

No need to spend extra right now...

I'm making the statement above assuming this is the Bogen adapter you have or similar...

yeah that looks like the one. Can you talk me through how to do this? I'm at work now but will try later when I get home.

I tighten the metal stud in the Bogen.
(Top stud shown in pic with the chrome t-bar.)

Than I simply screw the platic foot on snug enough, not too tight because it is plastic.

Now you can loosen the chrome t-bar to spin the foot into the desired position.

Mount the Bogen on your stand and attach the umbrella.

I than attach the flash to the plastic shoe last and lock it in place.

Again, it is a plastic shoe so don't abuse it.
I have several 580's and have not had a problem with any of them.

If you have paranoia's about it, buy the inexpensive shoes shown above.

If you have tons of money to blow, you could always but this one... lol
I think it's a custom piece just for the 580, but overkill.

If you are still confused, I can try and post some pic's later tonight...
