I bought a 60" octabox for my Genesis 200 lights, but I'm having trouble holding it up. Even tightening the grip as hard as I could on the Genesis, the massive softbox mounted on a light stand droops after 30 seconds.

As a workaround, I'm holding up with some clamps on my reflector holder/boom stand, but I'm looking for a more permanent solution. Is it simply too big for the Genesis? If so, what lights are strong enough to hold it?

Hi tepic,

Get yourself one of these Photoflex speed ring's for Elinchrom. There are 1/4"-20 and 3/8" threaded mounting holes that you can mount to a lightstand, arm or boom. It shifts the weight from the strobes' swivel mount to the speed ring and you don't have to worry about the swivel mount being weakened or slipping.

It works great. The only downside is if you're using square or rectangular boxes, as it does not allow the modifier to turn on the speed ring and is fixed, but for Octa's, it's an excellent solution.

Is this the one you got? If so, how is this speedring compare to the one Robert recommended? I have this octa coming my way.

Unless I'm mistaken, that speed ring only has the 8 holes for rods from a softbox or octa. The Photoflex ring has the 8 holes plus additional threaded 1/4"-20 and 3/8" holes.

Yeah, that's it. The speed ring doesn't look all that different from what Rob posted except for the threaded hole.

Correct. There are tons of speed rings available with the Elinchrom mount. It's the threaded mounting holes that makes it different. There are a few other manufacturers of rings that have the threaded mounting holes. I'm just not sure which they are.

Interestingly, the speed ring on my Calumet Nova 24x32 softbox that came as part of the $200 kit is threaded, but only supports 4 rods.
