What is the difference between Basalt and Carbon Fibre? Which one is superior in term of longevity, weight and stability? And why?

From the Gitzo website:

Gitzo introduces the second High Performance generation of basalt fiber tubes. Thanks to a radical innovation in the production process, the new tube is now up to 22% stronger than its predecessor. Made by the same technology used for 6X carbon fiber tubes, it offers a high thermal and dimensional stability and good vibration absorption. It is an intermediate solution between 6X and aluminum tubes, however by getting closer to the Gitzo 6X unmatched performances, it is a high quality alternative to competitors' carbon fiber tripods.
