I have a Transcend 16gb Class 6 SDHC card that I used with my XSi.

Just got a 50D, so now I have to go CF.

My question is if any of you guys have used these SDHC to CF conversion cards?

SD-CF II : SD to CF Type II Adapter (Supports SDHC) (external link)

One benefit I can see from using one of these is that I don't have to go out and buy a CF reader. My laptop, etc. already has a build in SDHC card reader.

So now I'm deciding between....

1. Getting this adapter and using my current 16gb SDHC class 6 card.

or

2. Buy a 16gb Compact flash card (45mb/60mb, 300x) + USB compact flash reader.

Will using the adapter hurt performance while shooting? And if so, by how much?

I wouldn't bother, I keep reading

Host data transfer rate: 16.6MBytes/sec

and thinking the 50D can write faster then such (if the transfer speed is even 16.6 is another question). I would go with dedicated compact flash cards (I did when I moved from my XSi to the 7D).

i wouldnt trust that thing... it looks cheap.

Anyways, wouldnt it be better to get multiple cards instead of just 1 16 gig card... in case something happens to 1.

I have had 2 2 gig cards for the past 2-3 years and havent had a problem, but i have accidentally washed one.

anyways, just get a good cf card and the card readers are cheap as well...

I have used them with no problem. Leave it in and just pop the SD card less change of bent pins ( that so many complain about) Unless you are shooting high speed activities and a lot of FPS I have not seen any problem with recording speed.

Ok, if going with CF... given that I already have a 4GB Sandisk Extreme III.

Should I get an additional:

1. 16GB Sandisk Extreme III for $64.95

or

2. 3 pack 8GB Sandisk Extreme III for $94.95

Also, another thing to mention. I'm not one to keep my photos on my memory cards long, and I'm not out for extremely long periods of time. As soon as I get back to my computer, my photos come off those memory cards right away and onto my external USB drives.

im a fan of more smaller cards so i would have to vote for option 2

I think I paid around $16 US for a no-name el cheapo converter from an ebay seller
in Hong Kong, and it's never shown any sort of problem.
Speed is simply not an issue for me due to my shooting style, but this is an
important aspect to consider if speed does matter to you.

I'd vote option 2, for those "O s@%*" moments and allowing you to micromanage your memory.

pulled the trigger on option #2 :)

After rebate + bing cashback, it actually came out to roughly $65 for 3x 8GB Sandisk Extreme III.

Could you tell us where you found the 3 pack for that price with Bing. I haven't had any luck finding it. Thanks.

I've used one of these.

I went to Europe for a month and brought one of these little adapters in case I ran out of space on my CF cards (I brought 32GB worth). I ran out of space about half way through, and the only type of cards I could find readily were SD cards - mission accomplished.

As far as how it performs - poorly. Very poorly. The transfer speeds are insanely slow. When you fill up your camera's buffer, expect at least a 30 second delay or longer to empty it to the card. For the type of use I was putting it through this was fine.

For what the adapter costs, it is a useful accessory to have if you know you're going on a long trip. Glad you went for CF cards though :)

After all SDHC is a serial connection device and -- at the fastest -- handles Class 2 - 2MB/second, Class 4 - 4MB/second, Class 6 - 6MB/second . Theses are worst case transfers, and ideal conditions do permit 20-30MB/sec rates.

CF is a parallel connection device so it has many more lines passing data! Serial is cheaper for the manufacturers, it does no good for the consumer wanting to maximize data transfer. The protocols involved in each are the limitations, which explains why USB (which is serial) can outperform parallel ports. But read Galbraith's speed ratings with the new Nikon D3x...the CF is 30MB/sec while the best of the SDHC is 3.5MB/sec!
