Hi... I'm fairly new to POTN, have been surfin' around off and on for a while now, just not active...
Anyways... I know that there are a couple generic Battery Grips out there that work like a charm, I have a MeiKe MK-450D from ebay and it's well built and does everything the canon model can do. My question is are there any comparable flashes to the Canon models?

I'm just an amateur, but can definitely benefit from a better flash. I've looked at the entry level Speedflash, but I could use the swivel head.

Anyone know of any?

There's always the 580ex version 1. it goes for 250 right now.

however, if you're just learning about lighting and want to venture into off camera flash, you could try shooting with a vivitar 285hv.

they're easily found used for 40 dollars and new for 80. hook it up with a sync cable to whatever camera you have, and you have a one light setup that doesn't break the bank.

You can also add optical slaves to flashes. Just remember with the Vivitars, you're running full manual.

Check out Strobist.blogspot.com for more info in general. there're some great articles there to teach a lighting neophyte.

There was a thread yesterday that i read saying that the Nissin Di866 is overall just as good as the 580exII at half the price. The only thing that the 580 really had over it was it was waterproof, but that doesnt matter a whole lot to me since neithor my lenses or camera is waterproof, lol.

Thanks so far... I'm kinda lookin at the YN460??? any concerns with that flash? I think it goes for around 50 bucks on ebay... is that too cheap? Also will I be able to use it on camera? I'm not lookin for anything off camera... just somethin better than camera's flash...

the YN460 ($40 on ebay) is good if you don't need ETTL, (I have one and it's work on camera or off) if your budget is a little higher I would consider the YN465 with ETTL ($70 ?)

I ordered one for around $50 on the 18th, and it arrived last night (that's only 8days) :D haven't done much testing yet, as I bought it as a second (offshoe) flash, if only I purchased the RF-602 trigger/receivers from the same buyer...:x

I have been scoping one out too. Who did you buy it from?

Hmm, I can't seem to find that thread with testresults - but there's a YN-460 and a YN-460II on the market, version 2 seemed slightly more powerful from the test? (and costs $10 extra)
