Alright guys, so, I have a bit of a hypothetical question.

Lets say I wanted to shoot skiers on the US Ski Team.. what gear would you suggest in terms of body, lenses, etc.? And also, what techniques do you think I'd need to learn to be able to get good/great shots out of it?

Camera gear: Canon 5D Mark IV | Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II | Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L II | Lights: Elinchrom Ranger RX Speed AS

Budget?

Photography is about GEAR and not talent or practice. Practice won't make you a better photographer. Expensive equipment will. =D

Fast camera, genre 50D or 7D. A 70-200mm f/4, you don't need a 2.8 for fast action in daylight. If you can't get close enough to use 200mm, you'll need a long prime probably...

An idea on a budget would help with suggestions though.

Id think you would be much better off with a 100-400L then a 70-200L. Or a big zoom prime for the better quality/faster.

...zoom prime...

Will take a while to find.
It's not the US, or any other, team, but it could have been.
Taken with a 7D + BG-E7 + EF 70-200 mm f/4L IS USM.

On large competitions, 200 mm is often too short.

Hypothetical. Not going to do it. Budget doesn't apply, haha.

300mm 2.8 IS, a 1D Mark IV and the fastest, biggest card you can afford.

Then practice subject acquisition, panning, and forecasting where your subject will be and when.

Well hell, buy that 1200mm from B&H, get a 1DMkIV and just shoot from the freakin' Lodge...

Why even go out and get cold?

Hah! That'd might work, haha, but you can't get the "race" experience without being in the cold with them, LOL.

1D4 with 400 2.8L IS USM =) although a 100-400L would work well as well.

And it's hard to sip quality Scotch while standing in a snow drift... ;)

True, but it's better to be sober than drunk in photography. Well, actually, I don't really know about that. Hah, anyone have any personal being-drunk-and-taking-pictures experiences?

Hypothetically, it can be done...
