I'm going to look at a 5D classic for sale. How do I check the number of actuations? Thanks.

Send it to Canon.

If it makes you feel any better, I replaced a shutter on my 5D and it costs around $175

I am almost positive the only way you can find out the actuations, besides for the 1d, 1dII and 40d (is there more?) is to send it to canon

Nothing available for a 5D except send it to Canon.

This software will show the shutter count information on Canon newer DIGIC III/IV DSLRs:

There are quite a number of shutter count softwares available for the 1D series, including simply viewing the file info in later editions of Photoshop.

The astrojargon util doesn't work on 1D series. 1D count works, but only up until the 1D2. 1D3 and newer so far have nothing.

You can't unless you send it to the factory.

Nice, my friend's 1d was quoted for $375 for shutter replacement. And another $350 or so for hot shoe replacement, $30 for sensor cleaning and an unknown amount for error 99, though a minimum of $90.

That's right.
I acquired a used "low milage around 6k" 5D and after it came back from factory service, the actually count was 26,000, still "low milage" though.;)

Yeah, 1DCount.exe. I should have said "up until the 1D3". I meant 1D and 1D2

Yes, that definitely makes me feel better, especially since there's now way to find the shutter count without sending to Canon. It's surprising that all these used 5D' usually list accuations.

Thanks for info everyone.

^ Did you bring yours to the Jamesburg, NJ service center? I'm thinking of getting my shutter replaced just for piece of mind. If it's only $175 i'll definitely send it in. Don't want my 5D failing during a wedding. My back up body isn't full frame(40d).

Yes, the repair was done in Jamesburg. It was about a year ago, so I'd call them to confirm that they haven't skyrocketed with their price.
