^ Did you bring yours to the Jamesburg, NJ service center? I'm thinking of getting my shutter replaced just for piece of mind. If it's only $175 i'll definitely send it in. Don't want my 5D failing during a wedding. My back up body isn't full frame(40d).

Actually they replaced mine for free because of a recall item with the mirror for my series.

Sending my 5D out for mirror repair on Friday. I'm hoping the check the actuations per my request. How many of you guys have asked for the shutter count from Canon and have gotten it when sending off for mirror repair?

Send it to Canon.

If it makes you feel any better, I replaced a shutter on my 5D and it costs around $175

So the mirror replace is only free? Not the shutter?

has anyone successfully had canon return the shutter actuation count to them? all i've seen searching around is everyone saying canon can do it.

I'm asking because i'm a developer working to port magic lantern to the 5d classic. I've made a lot of progress but can't find any trace of a shutter counter in the firmware (unlike modern cameras like the 5d2 or Rebel cameras).

If canon can do it then I'm not seraching for a ghost. I'd like to know if there is actually a shutter counter before i waste any more time searching. If anyone has had expeience with the canon service center, please let me know! thanks!

Check one of the "5D Mirror Fix" threads and you'll see a number of posts where they asked Canon for the Shutter count and got it. Mine was only 2 days old so I didn't bother.

PS - I also develop software for EOS cameras with the Canon SDK and they "hid" the shutter count function about 2 years ago. I've been trying to find it and use it on my xTi and 5Dc with no success.

Yes, I've seen it written down on a receipt from Canon. Who knows if the number is something they got from the camera or pulled out of their butt - but they did write a number down.

you should look into developing magic lantern, it's much more fun than the canon sdk :) you can do anything with magic lantern as your platform. the only limit is how much you study the firmware dumps to see how the camera works.

The 400plus project (rebel xti) have found the shutter count in their camera (which is older than the 5dc). The difference though is, in the 400d (rebel xti) firmware, there is a factory menu only accessible by canon (but we can access this). The factory menu displays the shutter count, so they found it like this.

In modern cameras it's just in a simple property (like iso, shutterspeed, shoot mode, etc) and can be read, but the property is absent in the 5dc, along with a factory menu. I guess if canon can do it though, then somewhere the shutter count is being recorded, so I just need to find it.

checking your shutter count could be as easy as taking a look at the magic lantern menu:

obviously it isn't working yet though

I got into it doing work in the aviation industry on contract. They're pretty particular about software its history with all the security and such. We couldn't use Open Source or shareware and all code (including APIs) needed to be strictly tested.

Moved on to new work and am only fooling with EOS in my spare time.

I had mine sent in for fix in October and asked for the shutter count. They sent back the camera fixed and cleaned perfectly but didn't get the count. I called them and gave them the reference number and then they gave it to me. BTW, they sent the camera next day delivery from NJ to ME.
