I currently shoot with my XTI - it seems to do me just fine for anything I shoot in the studio, but I feel limited by it's poor ISO performance when i'm shooting outdoors or at venue locations.

I've been itching to upgrade to a 40d or 50d - leaning towards the 50d, but cash is tight.

Is it worth trying to trade?

I have two of the XTI bodies, both with 18-55mm kit lenses, one with an ebay battery grip. Two chargers, 5 batteries etc.

I'm not sure who would be interested in such a trade, maybe someone looking for some backup bodies.

Or, is it going to be simpler to sell them off after buying my new body?

You can probably get 750 for all of that together, why not sell it and get a 40d straight up, or sell it..put another 150ish on top and get a 50d :D

I'm still too new of a member to post to the Sell forums, and my local Craigslist sucks :) On top of that, I kind of need one of the camera's until I can get the new one :)

Hence my thoughts around trading.

I guess it can't hurt to try it, once I can post to the Sell forums. Or convince my wife to let me spend our tax return ... hmmm ...

I would try and sell 1 of the XTi's with the grip and the other 18-55 lens. 40D's have been showing up on here quite frequently for good prices.

If cash is really tight I would try and grab a used 40D and a 18-55 IS, updated/better version of the lens you already have. I have seen them go for around $100-ish on here and is a good lens for the money.

If you have a bit more to spend I would look into the 17-50,55's from Canon, Tamron etc...

If low light is an issue for you which you cite the need for better ISO performance a lens with IS will be a huge help as well, not quite as good as a fast lens (2.8, 1.8, etc), but is a cheaper route until you have more funds available.

I have had great luck on here acquiring used gear from great people. This site is a great resource for not only information but camera gear as well.

Best of luck, keep us posted on your progress.

Actually, I have a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 lens I use daily, and i'd be keeping that, both kit lenses are currently unused. I'd be keeping my Tamron, 50mm f1.8 prime and the kit zoom (75 - 300) that came with the camera, but I don't use much.

I'll hold off until I can list here - I don't want to mess with my local Craigslist again - I had a hell of a time selling my old studio hotlamps on there.

What would be a ballpark price for a clean XTI, ebay grip, couple of batteries and kit 18-55mm lens? I see them in the $400 range - does that sound reasonable?

I also think I could convince my wife to spring for the extra $100 if it was a 40d vs 50d :)
