In the last 2 days, I have seen 3 1D series bodies that were either for sale or recently purchased. These 3 bodies have had something put on to them (think Armor All) to make them shine.

Since none of the pics are mine, I will not post them here, but folks, in my opinion:

Baby oil on a swimsuit model's body = Good

Baby oil on a 1D body = Bad

Funny thing is, the ones that are all shiny are getting ridiculous amounts of "PM Sent"s. Am I the only one that wouldn't go near them since I can only think of how slippery they would be to handle when my hands start to sweat, or if it starts to rain?

I agree, a 1D should only shine in it's performance! I know what you're talking about and I don't understand the need to shine 'er up before sale. Wipe it down with a damp cloth, clean it up. Armor all it? No!

Maybe it's not oil at all... Maybe it's sweat from the worried owners reading, and believing, all the MK3's suck threads! I may be in the market 2nd body if the prices drop much more!

I've seen them and thought the same, even saw a couple of "shiny" comments .... I wouldn't touch those camera bodies let alone buy them .... Armor All is for .... well, it's worthless lol

I saw one the other day, man it looked like a wet noodle! Looked like it was sprayed down with WD40 and then photographed wet. You might want to do that to a lawn mower for a craigslist ad, but not to a Pro camera... LOL

If you were selling a Pro Camera and you did not make an effort to make it look good and clean you would be a bloody fool.

Try selling your Corvette covered in mud.

What a silly thread.

Ive only worked the automotive industry for over 30 years. Not a smidgeon of experience I suppose.

Here is a camera that has been cleaned and polished up. I have no problem with this.

https://photography-on-the.net …php?t=817207&highlight=1d

Its when you soak the camera down that I dont agree that it helps the sale and could be destructive, especially to non sealed cameras.

I have seen in my auto repair experience MANY damaged body components, trim paint and electronic switches and devices from too much armour all gobbed on...

What a silly thread.

Cleaning something up before selling it is one thing. Impacting the usability of the end product to do so, is another. Let's use your Corvette analogy. Someone is selling their Vette, and decide that "Hey, it's a sports car. I will put big fat racing tires on the car so that people buy it quicker."

Now said Corvette is purchased. It starts to snow. Since the tires have no treads, that Corvette crashes into a tree.

Same thing here. Something that makes the camera so shiny is going to be slippery to hold, especially when something wet makes contact with it. Reach for said camera, to grab a shot in the rain, lose grip and camera with a $2k lens attached, has a great time partying with concrete.

What if I use just bleach then baby oil? :D. Jk. As nice as it makes them look I'm not doing it. My 1d looks perfectly fine I don't see why I'd have to lube it up. That being said I clean my camera with alcohol strips. Works awesome.
