For pure IQ the 70-200 is better but they are different lenses based on their focal length so IQ, alone, is not necessarily the best choice.

Do you find yourself often wishing for a longer lens than you have ?
Do you often use your lens between 50 and 100mm ?
What other lens(es) do you have ?

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

A little more info would help. What other lenses do you currently have? Are you looking for more reach, or better IQ? Outdoor shooting only, or some indoor?

For animals i would say the 100-400 is better, you will need the reach. For sports, the 70-200 is gonna be better because it is gonna be faster.

Indoor, your going to need the 70-200 f2.8 as the 100-400 will be too slow. Outdoors, the 100-400 is an excellent wildlife lens. If you can live with outdoor use only and want more reach and better IQ than your 55-250 then go for the 100-400. If you are going to want to take it inside than the 70-200 f2.8 is a better choice and it will take a 1.4 tcon nicely giving you 280mm on the long end.

Then 100-400 should like what you need. 70-200 is shorter than 55-250IS, so cannot do what you want.

If you are generally happy with the 55-250 (other than the length), then the 100-400 is a very good lens that will definitely get you more reach and still be able to handle outdoor sports. Sinve the 100-400 is cheaper, you could also add an 85/1.8 or 100/2 for those times when you need a wider aperture indoors.

You might also want to think about renting the 100-400 before buying, just to see if it will meet your needs. I had a 400mm lens for about a year, and ended up selling it because I never used it
