Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

For sports, the 70-200 is gonna be better because it is gonna be faster. Will | WilliamLiuPhotography.com

Outdoors, the 100-400 is an excellent wildlife lens. If you can live with outdoor use only and want more reach and better IQ than your 55-250 then go for the 100-400. If you are going to want to take it inside than the 70-200 f2.8 is a better choice and it will take a 1.4 tcon nicely giving you 280mm on the long end.

timbop Goldmember More info | Jan 27, 2010 22:22 | #9 If you are generally happy with the 55-250 (other than the length), then the 100-400 is a very good lens that will definitely get you more reach and still be able to handle outdoor sports. Sinve the 100-400 is cheaper, you could also add an 85/1.8 or 100/2 for those times when you need a wider aperture indoors.
