I actually think that for learning, non-ettl is better as you are actually controlling the lights yourself and not letting the camera decide what it thinks you want. here might also be inconsistency between shots.
Although there is definitely a time and place for everything.

That's right Chris. There are still going to be many people that are triggering a flash in Manual mode and not using ETTL. Tons of people don't want or need ETTL and for a lot of people the ability to push the flash further forward is a complete non-issue because they're not mounting a flash on top of a trigger that gets in the way.

This is why I guess I'm going to get the off shoe cord. So I can mount the flash the way its intended.

So with B&H closed now for a while, anyone suggest a good hot shoe cable online elsewhere?

Or did you QBox24 users also buy a Cheetah Stand light stand too? Prices there seem high. Looks good quality though. I guess the leg action is what costs here, seems like a great stand.
Maybe I should just pull the trigger and get the QBox24 and a C8 or C12 stand! Air cushioned or non? Dang more decisions!

This guy likes them!

Anyone using the Cheetah Stands? Wondering if I need the 8' or 12' version. I'm tempted to get the 12' air cushioned version...

If you're not concerned with ultra compact and ultra light then the C12 Air is a more solid stand than the C8. If you're going to use the Qbox24 or larger or more front heavy devices then the C8 won't give you the stability you're going to want.

Ok, so if I every decided to purchase one of his Octoboxes etc, probably want/need the 12' huh...that sounds good to me, and what I figured. Is the air cushion version worth the price?

Robert, Do we need to use Stofen with the softbox to avoid the light being unidirectional?

No you don't, and in most cases it's not worth giving up the light you lose by using the Sto-Fen.

I've found that if I keep my flash zoom setting on 24mm I get great results.

So you use both layers of diffusion, and set your flash to 24mm and get these great results?
Good tip to know.

Yup. It's a question of whether we want to measurebate or shoot. :D

In real world shooting it just doesn't pay to worry about having perfectly even coverage and no hot spots. I've found that as long as you're using a zoom setting of around 24mm (could be wider but you start to lose more front firing light and power is reduced slightly) then you'll be fine.
