How well do you guys think this softbox will sit on a Manfrotto Nano stand? Is the softbox going to be too heavy? Also, did I read somewhere that this qbox 24 could be used with Alien Bee strobes as well?!?

Assuming it balances and doesn't topple over, I still wouldn't use the Nano unless you had someone to hold on to it or had some weights or sandbags at the base of the stand.

Thanks, thats what I was wondering. I was assuming the stand may not be able to hold the weight of the softbox/adapter/speedlite all together. The Nano does work well with my umbrella adapter/580 and umbrella. So...can the softbox be used for sure with the alienbee strobes?

I think it can, with the right ring adapter?

While you may be able to makeshift and find ways to somehow make it work, the answer to the question is the the one significant difference between the Lastolite EZYbox and the Cheetah Qbox is that Cheetah does not have inserts or speedring adapters to use the Qbox with studio strobes. It is intended to be used with hot shoe flashes. For the most part no one really has a problem with that because once you're hauling studio strobes to a location you're not concerned about the compactness of your softbox. Instead, most people will use a medium to large softbox and only use something as small as a 24" box when using Speedlight's.

If you had your Bees and wanted really soft light then you'd be better off with a large umbrella than a 24" softbox. The 24" box will still require you to be very close to your subject to produce soft wrapping light, no matter how much power you have.

That's not really how it works and I can tell you that neither the Elinchrom insert or the Bowens insert fit securely in the back of the Qbox. They fit but will all sorts of play and wiggle room and a little breeze or bumping around and the box could come right off the ring.

What stands are everybody using with their Q24's?

All I've got is a Manfrotto Nano... will that suffice & do I need anything else or will the Q24 attach directly to the stand (with the included bracket?)

Thanks folks!

xx

I don't think the Qbox 24 will work very well with the nano's. Mainly because of the ball head on the barcket. You'd run into issues when pointing the box down.

HI Aaron. The Qbox24 will mount just fine on a nano and have just as much adjustability as with any other stand. The problem is that the nano is so light with such a small footprint that the Qbox or any modifier that is deep will pull the stand over. Adding the grid would make it impossible to even balance.

Nano is for very lightweight use. Otherwise, you need to sandbag it, which negates the whole idea of how light and compact the Nano is for hauling around. Nano is fine for something like Chuck Gardner's DIY reflector, where it is mostly in vertical alignment.

I use the Qbox 24, the ebay 20x20 softbox, 43 inch collapsible umbrellas and at times, a 28x28 apollo or a single 60inch westcott umbrells with the nano stands. As long as I am inside or outside in no wind, they are fine.

If I go outside and its windy, I use a cheapo set of ankle weights from Walmart to hold them down. Great sandbag replacement as they are durable, cheap, and come with velcro straps for hanging or fastening them.

The nano stands are way better than you would think. You can adjust them quite a bit to get a wider and wider footprint with the legs if you need the stability.

Ah man now I'm stuck plum in the middle of TMR and cXThree...... I guess I could wait till the Q24 arrives and see how I feel with it on the Nano then order something else if I feel it's not right...

- How is the official stand in terms of weight / durability / portability / use for more than just the softbox etc?
