This is my first post, glad to have found this place on the net.

Anyways, I'm trying to decide between a 135 f/2 or an 85mm 1.8 for a prime. I will be primarily using it as a street shooter with my 7D.

Which do you guys think will be more fitting? I have a 60mm 2.8 Macro. Do you think 85mm is too similar of a range like the 60?

Thanks.

Very simple... go in between and get the excellent 100mm 2.0. Very sharp, outstanding bokeh, less CA than the 85mm 1.8, and priced much nicer that the 135mm 2.0. Why are you not considering it?

Between the 2 lenses you mention, the 135mm makes far more sense.

Both are great lenses. If money is no consideration, I'd get the 135mm for the extra reach in street candids. Also, although I've never done this myself, the 135 reportedly takes a 1.4x TC pretty well, making it 189mm and f/2.8 for times when you need even a little more reach and also saves you the extra $$$ you may spend on a 70-200 zoom.

I've had the 85mm 1.8 before and it's a good lens, but the 135 is a GREAT lens!

I've owned the 85 1.8. It's one of Canon's best bang for the buck lenses.

That being said, if it's a choice between the 85 1.8 and the 135L, I'll take the 135 any day, every day.

135 is a sweeeeeeeeeet lens. The 85 is very nice but FL is too close to the 60.
I agree with nightcat... why not consider the 100 f2?

My next purchase is going to be a EF 135mm f/2,,probably early next month..

I mainly shoot low light/high ISO street candids using a 50D (or my 20D) with a Sigma EX 50-150mm f/2.8 which works fantastic.. I also like to use my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 when the lighting gets real low..

In my opinion the EF 135mm f/2 is the way to go for me as I prefer a bit of extra reach..

Thanks for all the answers. I'm not really sure why I never considered the 100mm f2. So I'll consider between the 100 f/2 and the 135 f/2.

what about the Zeiss 85 f/1.4 I've been looking at these two lenses plus the Zeiss. Well I was looking at the 85L and not the 1.8 though.

Assuming you are fast enough to MF it, while street shooting.
