I'm placing my order now...............

Thanks Peter. It looks great.

You should be good, he has 14 day full refund policy.

I have a friend who uses camera straps. If you're a camera strap person, IMO you'll never feel secure with the Spider, it's a psychology thing. But if you deactivate the constant unlock position then your camera is not going anywhere until you hit the release. I'll post pics on how to do it when you get it. It's easy, you'll need 2 allen wrenches.

I'll be sure to let you know how I like it. I'm using the same gear as Peter.. the D700 with MB-D10 grip.

I'm really excited because straps make me crazy and I find them inconvenient and cumbersome.

I have no doubt that I'll adjust to it quickly.

...Setup ready to go ;)

Thanks, Peter, for the Rotagrid info. I'm sure this is the first time many of us have actually seen one. A few questions if you don't mind: That entire grid assembly just Velcros over the outer edge of the softbox with no need to change the standard rods? Can the grid be removed from inside the contraption leaving the hooded diffuser? Also, is the Rotagrid packed in with the softbox in your photo?

Last thing: I really wish you'd buy some arms for your mannequin.

I saw this softbox over 6 months ago at my dealer, but if im not misstaken the hooded front and grid is sewn together wich means you cant detach it. Wich would explain why the grid is not sold sepparatly and is sold as a hooded front with grid.

Dave: the Rotagrid composes of white diffuser, grid and front hooded diffuser and it's all ONE piece. Slips on exactly like typical Eli front diffusers, genius in its simplicity. Easiest grid I've ever installed:

Top: back of Rotagrid, you can see the white diffuser is sewn in.
Bottom: separate plain white front diffuser for when you don't want to use grid.

I just stuff the Rotagrid and front/rear diffusers inside the Rotalux and close it up:

all in there :)

Thanks Peter. That's really interesting. I had no idea how this system worked. Do you find yourself using the grid for location work?

That's great Peter. Thanks a million for the photos. Now everything is clear. Considering the simplicity of setup, I think it might just be worth the extra $$$ to go with the 27" Rotalux and Rotagrid rather than a cheaper-but-fussier-to-set-up off brand.

Dave F.

PS: I still wish your mannequin had arms.

I would use it for indoor locations to balance existing light with flash (ISO 800), like the mannequin pics. I would use it in shaded outdoors if model is stading directly in front of a background to isolate model. But if background is distant than no grid.

The Rotagrid was $134 from Adorama and they had it in stock. BH was cheaper but 7-14 days shipping. Rotagrid is cheaper than Lighttools grids which are $200-400. I had a Visico grid for one of their octaboxes where you had to attach velcro all around. Rotagrid much easier.

Mannequin doesn't like her arms ;)

I wouldnt trust black rapid with a P&S let alone my dslr's.

I haven't had any problem with 1 series and 70-200mm f2.8 hanging with the black rapid strap. Saw someone using 300mm f2.8 with it a local high school football game.

Thanks Peter for grid pics. I´ve been designing grids for my Elinca SBs and my design is pretty much the same with Elinchroms own design.
I just have to find good material and start making it
