Has anyone got a link to focusing screens for the 7D? I think mine got a little scratch and it is very irritating. I've changed the screen a few times on my 40D but I don't know if it works in the same way for the 7D. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The focusing screen in the 7D isn't supposed to be user replaceable.

Can't be changed. :(
Mine got a tiny little spot right on the center and I'm getting used to the idea it will be there forever. I'm not sending it in just for that...

How did you get scratch or spot?

I asked this a few days ago and doesn't look like Canon will offer a focus screen.

Any word that they might offer downloadable ones? From what I've seen the digital grid is very impressive, is the screen capable of other graphics or only the presets?

What would you like it to do?

I don't believe you can change the screens on the 7D. Let us know if you find one.

Ha-ha, after I told you the user can't replace the screen, three more posters said the same. I think we can be certain about that now.

The patterns you can turn on and off in the viewfinder are pre-defined. You can enable and disable them as the camera allows you to, but not change them. It's like the top display on the camera. It can only display the symbols manufactured into it.

I understand how it functions, it's like the Nikon screens. I just wasn't sure if this was something that could be "electronically" updated, via download or software update. It's an LCD, so it's possible to have more options down the road.

Actually you can't, because it's not an LCD like an LCD monitor, made by pixels. It's an LCD like an watch LCD, made of patterns that are turned on and off, but are pre-defined ;)

Thanks for the responses. Does anyone have any idea of how to clean the damn thing without damaging it?

The focussing screen on the 7D (not the LCD, transmissive screen), is changeable. There is a regular screen below the LCD screen, which is accessible by removing 2 screws holding a plate, just behind top of the lens mount. The screen can be then removed using the usual tool that is supplied with Canon interchangeable screens (see focusingscreen.com site for images of this procedure). The shape & positioning of the locating lugs are different to the screens for say, the 50D or 40D, so existing screens from full frame cameras will have to be modified to suit (as they are for 40 & 50D's etc.). Katzeye is also currently developing screens for the 7D (see their website).

As a keen macro photographer, I really miss the 'split image with focussing collar' screen that I have on my 50D, so am looking forward to receiving the modified Nikon K3 screen for my 7D.

Kev
