Some people here (external link) also say the 1.4 has faster AF.

I really think it depends on the camera body.

Actually that is probubly true, Much like the 85mm f/1.8 is faster than the 85mm f/1.2, its because the size of the glass its moving is greater, thus its a lot slower to focus

Also f/1.2 is marginally harder to get accurate focus on, so its probubly sacrificing speed for accuracy

I think the accuracy > speed argument is the main reason. Although I personally find the 50L to focus faster than the 50 1.4, I haven't scientifically tested it. But I have an idea about how one could perform such a test... using a model railroad, a tripod, a 1D mk III and a wireless remote trigger. All I need is the time to do the test. And a model railroad.

See i thought that at one time too but someone pointed out that the actual -focusing- group in most of the super teles is a very small tiny and lightweight section of the lens

Theres gotta be more to it though..
