Cool review. I would love to see the Sigma 1.4 included tho. Maybe next time? =)

is it just me or is the f/1.4's colors the worst of the three..

like the f/1.8 is a slight more saturated as is the f/1.2... (Well the f/1.2 is an L)

Agreed. I'm very surprised that the nifty's performance!

I love how no one is willing to call the nifty fifty a "good lens" only a "good lens for the price"

I am willing to say it, stand back folks, the nifty fifty is a good lens!

dkspook, great reviewbw!, and I think your spot on:D
Tired of hearing people crying about how it isn't "perfect" enough, while ignore all it's unique qualities...

The 50L is a specialty lense that is very well built; it's a rock.
One other notable thing that separates it from the other 50's is it's exceptional flare control.

This lense is just plain fun to shoot with. It also works very well on the 1DMK-3.
If you want the 50mm perspective and do street shooting, this is the one to get.

Great review! And the nifty fifty is a good lens. I would never ever use it again so long as I have the 1.4 or the L. But it is a good lens :p

The "other" 50's do surprisingly well as far as IQ.
Ha-ha, I think that spoiled some into thinking the L version should or would be cheaper.
The 50L continues to hold it's fetching price to spite the howls in the night:p

I agree its a good lens, optically

I just hate the focusing ring..and I'm sorry but im not paying twice the price for the original Nifty when not much more gets me a 50mm f/1.4...

Great review, and thanks for the effort.

Makes me ponder (yet again!) if I should simply replace my 50f1.4 with another one when the AF dies, and aim for the 35L to fill a gap, rather than the 50L to replace the f1.4....

Geesh they really need to fix that stupid 50mm f/1.4 :/

It seems like almost 50% of the people who buy one have the AF fail

Hey Kenji, it's not failed, but I love 50mm with a wide aperture, so I use it a LOT!
That means, it's going to die at some point....and I like to think ahead....
:D

Meanwhile, I'm counting down to the 7D and 200Lf2.8!!!!!
Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
